Question Daily time to use contacts

Hi, new member here.

I've worn (and removed after a couple of hours) contacts for the first time today. I have a question regarding contacts time usage daily.

I've been told that new users should wear contacts for around 4 hours daily at the begining, then generally increase the time as the days go by, until then we're able to wear contacts for a whole day until we go to sleep.

I've got a slight problem though. I bought the contacts today because of a very important job I've got on Saturday evening, which is serving food and drinks in a hall to very important people, such as the ambassadors in Malta and the president. Now, I would need the contacts because I can't afford slip ups, though by Saturday I wouldn't be able to wear the contacts for long if I should go by the 4-hour criteria.

I'll have to work around 8 hours so I'll be home after 9 hours, where I can then remove the contacts safely and appropriately.

I'm not sure what to do. Should I go ahead for that day and wear them for longer than usual? Is it really THAT much of a big deal?

Thank you. I've been really worried about this, considering I can't mess things up that day!

Well, xuerebx, first of all let me welcome you to Lens 101.

Secondly, although I'm no expert, I'm thinking there's no way to rush your tolerance to your contact lenses. Since today is Thursday, and you've got about 48 hours to get ready, see if you can wear your contacts the full eight hours today and tomorrow. I don't think you're going to do yourself injury, I just think that you run the risk of greeting Maltese ambassadors with red, watery eyes.

Since time is short, wear your contacts for as long as you can do so comfortably on Saturday night. If they start getting uncomfortable, take them out. Can you get eyedrops from your eye doctor before the Big Night?

In a situation such as this, asking some of your co-workers for a little help and understanding is better than trying to over wear your contacts. I wish you well. Let us know how it goes, okay?

Thanks a lot for the reply

I managed to wear mine from 11:30am to 7:30pm today. They felt uncomfortable in the last hour, and by 7:15 my eyes were read, and then I proceeded to take them off as soon as I got home (which only took 5 minutes today!).

So that's around 8 hours.

I'll wear them tomorrow too, and see how long I'll last. I'll get some tear drops with me just in case for Saturday. Someone suggested using this multipurpose solution I use for my contacts on my eyes. I told them I don't think that's a good idea! That's a disinfectant is it not?

Thanks again!

I think you're right. I think you'd be better off with the eye drops. What kind of contacts did you get? What brand?

The packet reads:

ACUVUE 2 Brand contact lens (etafilcon A)
Johnson and Johnson

Soft lenses. Like the above but in packets of 2.

I have just got back. The contacts didn't bother me one bit, except for the last 30minutes before I removed them. Eyes got a bit red. 3pm-2am

I guess that's good news

Thanks for your help!

I'm glad everything worked out well for you. I hope you had a good time and forgot about your contacts for a while.
