Hi Gabby. Welcome to Lens 101. So, you want to convince Mom and Dad that you can handle contact lenses, huh? Well, you might want to try showing them that you can be responsible in general. I don't know how old you are, but seeing that you need your parent's permission to get contact lenses, I'll assume you aren't in your forties. ![]() If you go to school, show them that you can get your homework done and get good grades. If you work, show up on time every day and do good work while you're there. Be helpful around the house, and show them that you can take good care of yourself by eating right, brushing your teeth, keeping yourself clean, and so on. If you're already doing all these things, point that out to Mom and Dad. Let us know how it goes for you, okay? |

I couldn't help but over hear your predicament. Fortunately, Acuvue has some more helpful advice to add to what Garfield 21 said: "TALK TO YOUR PARENTS Talking to your parents is one of the most important parts of getting contact lenses. Be prepared to answer your their questions. Knowing what you’re talking about shows that you’ve done the research and considered all the pros and cons of wearing (and caring for) contact lenses. Here are the things you should keep in mind when you’re ready for “The Big Talk”: 1. Ask your parents if you can talk to them about something important. Have the discussion at their convenience, not yours! (In other words, don’t tackle them when they’ve just walked in the door from work.) 2. Tell your parents that you’ve been thinking about getting contact lenses instead of glasses. Then tell them why. For example: * My glasses are a problem when I’m playing basketball. * I don’t see as well as I want to with glasses. * I think I could see better when I drive with contact lenses. 3. Ask your parents what they think of the idea. Then get ready to talk. Here are some issues they might bring up: `You’re not old enough for contact lenses.' Most eye care professionals report great results with young teens and contact lenses. The average age for teens to start wearing contact lenses is 13. 'You’re not responsible enough to take care of them.' Point out how you behave responsibly in other areas of your life. If you maintain good grades, do your homework, help out around the house and take good care of yourself, you’re probably responsible enough to take care of contact lenses. 'It’s too expensive.' Contact lenses are nowhere near as expensive as they used to be. Most people can wear contact lenses for about $200 a year – or less. Most glasses cost more than that. And if you lose a contact lens, replacing one is way less expensive than replacing a pair of glasses. 'They’re not safe.' Millions of people wear contact lenses. As long as you care for your lenses properly and follow your eye care professional’s instructions to the letter, contact lenses can be worn safely and comfortably. You don’t see as well with contacts as you do with glasses. Not true. Contact lenses correct all the same vision problems that glasses do (including astigmatism) – plus you get the excellent peripheral vision that glasses can’t give you. 'They’re uncomfortable.' Contact lenses are mainly made of water, so they’re extremely comfortable. In fact, new innovations in contact lens technology have made them so comfortable that most wearers prefer them over glasses. After you’ve talked, your parents will probably want to think about it. Give them time to make up their minds – this is a very important decision for them as well as for you." |

You're right, K-9. I wonder why lehua768 copied Garfield21's answer?

You're not kidding K-9. What are the odds, huh?
|

So . . . did you get your contact lenses? Lots of people did as you asked and posted some stuff.

I agree that the right way to go in convincing parents to let you wear contact lenses is to build trust. Garfield21 had some good suggestions on how to do that in the second post on this thread. |

I wore these in the early 2000's for about a year. They were sure convenient, comfortable, but way too pricey for me. They also didn't correct for astigmatism very well. I went back to PMMA lenses...which offered better vision, cheaper cost, and were simple to take care of. They also last forever (well almost). I've still got a pair from 1977 which are in good shape.

My parents wouldn't let me wear contact lenses until I could pay for them myself. That was in 1977. Soft lenses had just come out, but because of my visual problem...having astigmatism, they don't work for me. I got PMMA hard Here's the deal with your parents. Enlighten them to the fact that soft contact lenses...the monthly disposables are actually cheaper than glasses. A good pair of glasses today costs around $300, but you can easily beat that with 1 month disposable soft lenses. Going the daily disposable route is way too expensive. I hope it's not because you don't want to clean them, otherwise you probably shouldn't be wearing any kind of contact lens.

That's probably a pretty common arrangement, too. "Glasses are good enough for your father and me. If you want contacts, you'll have to pay for them yourself."
|

Here's the rest of the story. If you wear contacts, you need a backup pair of glasses anyway. I usually use my glasses first thing in the morning until I can get around to putting in my contacts. Glasses are also handy on long flights, because who in their right mind wants to wear contact lenses on an international flight????? Navigating in those bathrooms is more than a tad bit difficult. It's a real good place to lose a lens. I suppose daily disposables would be good for something like that...no cleaning necessary!!!

Yes, I think you're right. When your host takes their contact lenses out for the day, say good night Gracie.
