Since 1-Day Acuvue contacts are fairly inexpensive, what if you drop one on the floor while you're trying to put it in? Is it worth trying to save? I don't suppose the "five second rule" applies here, does it?

If its damage then maybe just throw it away..but if its fine..then i guess you have just to clean it..using the prescribed solution by your eye doctor..if you have doubts kindly check this link..http://www.acuvue.ca/site_en/faq.htm#lc

nope it does not apply..i guess you better replace it to another fresh one if you're lazy with the cleaning and the likes .. if it was dropped when you're ready to retire or sleep or think that you're finished all your paper work then..so be it..try another one the following day..

I think the five second rule is okay for dry food dropped on the floor, but not for contacts. As soon as it hits the floor it's ruined in my opinion.

I think I would have to agree with alyssa and Fitness Mistress, although alyssa said something about "being lazy with the cleaning" but you don't usually clean daily disposable contact lenses, you just throw them away at the end of the day, hence my question. Thank you for your help everybody. |

Alyssa, do you mean lazy with cleaning your contacts or your floors?

Personally I have dropped hard lenses, extended wear soft lenses on the floor and into the sink, my lap, etc. many times and provided you give it a good clean in the prescribed lens solution, then I think there will be no problems. Of course, daily lenses are more delicate so you would need to check there is no mechanical damage to the lens before reinserting.
I don't use daily disposable lenses very often, though of course as they can be fiddly to insert, I have also dropped these and reinserted after cleaning. knotlob |

Do we have any eye care professionals who want to weigh in on this issue? |

For all you Lens 101 members who wear dailies, are they cheap enough to just throw them away if you drop one? |

Well, that's pretty simple. Clean it up and re-use it even if it's just a daily disposable? I suppose that's better than getting another one. If it were me I'd probably have to throw them both out because I wouldn't want an "extra" lens lying about.
On the other hand, catt, aren't you the one who has saved all the old contacts in a jar? Was that you, or am I thinking of another woman? ![]() |

I'm going to slowly back away now . . . |

Too bad you couldn't keep those calcium deposits that dropped on the floor. That would be gross . . . You'll never hear the end of this, Catt. You realize that right? |

![]() Going back to the original question on this thread, you never said whether or not you subscribe to the "five second rule" when it comes to contact lenses. You just said "Pick it up, clean it up and put it in." I take it that applies no matter how long your contact lens has been on the floor? |

I've read quite of few of your posts; quite possibly all of them, and you never seemed to me like someone who needed to do a lot of "tongue curbing." Just be your own sweet self and you'll be fine. ![]() |

Pretty simple is right. I suppose dropping your contacts on a clean floor isn't a big deal as long as you clean it thoroughly.

Well . . . at the risk of creating a new thread attached to this one, let me ask--why did YOU opt for daily disposable contact lenses? |
|
|||
|
i cleaned it when it went into my sink. i guess i wouldn't because of how dirty a floor can be. but really i prolly shouldn't even have cleaned the one that fell in the sink given that people spit in there... lol. it all really depends on how clean the surface is, or at least your perception of how clean it is.

So you threw away a lens you dropped in the sink. Are you glad you did it?
|
|
|||

I think I would have thrown it away. Especially if, like autumn_leaf says, people have a history of spitting into the sink. Bleah.

Awesome tiger picture, Englishteacher1. Very fitting.

Well, it still sits in a sealed jar in my medicine cabinet. Also wanted to take home my "Concretions" -- calcium deposit from inside of eyelid -- that was removed yesterday, however, it was inadvertantly dropped. For this post, I was going to use another picture of the "bleah" tiger, but I couldn't find it. So I had to substitute. Collecting concretions. Bleah. |

Yeah, it seems that catt is no longer a member of Lens 101. It's a shame really. I hope it wasn't something that I said somewhere along the line. I never wanted her to leave. She posted some really nice pictures on this site.

This question always makes me think of a commercial I saw. It showed a little boy, maybe two years old, and he drops his cookie on the floor. It hits with a whistle and a kaboom, like a bomb. As the toddler approaches the fallen cookie, his footsteps are exaggerated so it sounds like he's Godzilla. Funny stuff.
