Default What If You Drop Your 1-Day Acuvue Contact Lens on the Floor?

Since 1-Day Acuvue contacts are fairly inexpensive, what if you drop one on the floor while you're trying to put it in? Is it worth trying to save? I don't suppose the "five second rule" applies here, does it?

If its damage then maybe just throw it away..but if its fine..then i guess you have just to clean it..using the prescribed solution by your eye doctor..if you have doubts kindly check this link..http://www.acuvue.ca/site_en/faq.htm#lc

nope it does not apply..i guess you better replace it to another fresh one if you're lazy with the cleaning and the likes .. if it was dropped when you're ready to retire or sleep or think that you're finished all your paper work then..so be it..try another one the following day..

I think the five second rule is okay for dry food dropped on the floor, but not for contacts. As soon as it hits the floor it's ruined in my opinion.

I checked that link and there's a question there about eye drops, but I didn't see anything that applied to dropped contact lenses.

I think I would have to agree with alyssa and Fitness Mistress, although alyssa said something about "being lazy with the cleaning" but you don't usually clean daily disposable contact lenses, you just throw them away at the end of the day, hence my question.

Thank you for your help everybody.

Alyssa, do you mean lazy with cleaning your contacts or your floors?

Personally I have dropped hard lenses, extended wear soft lenses on the floor and into the sink, my lap, etc. many times and provided you give it a good clean in the prescribed lens solution, then I think there will be no problems. Of course, daily lenses are more delicate so you would need to check there is no mechanical damage to the lens before reinserting.

I don't use daily disposable lenses very often, though of course as they can be fiddly to insert, I have also dropped these and reinserted after cleaning.

I hope that's an acceptable practice. Me personally, if I wore daily disposable contact lenses, I'd just throw it away if I were to drop it on the floor. My lap . . . maybe not.

Do we have any eye care professionals who want to weigh in on this issue?

You don't clean daily disposable contact lenses, do you? You certainly don't clean them at the end of the day and put them back in your eyes in the morning.

For all you Lens 101 members who wear dailies, are they cheap enough to just throw them away if you drop one?

Well, that's pretty simple. Clean it up and re-use it even if it's just a daily disposable? I suppose that's better than getting another one. If it were me I'd probably have to throw them both out because I wouldn't want an "extra" lens lying about.

On the other hand, catt, aren't you the one who has saved all the old contacts in a jar? Was that you, or am I thinking of another woman?

Yep, that was me. I also have a jar with an old sebaceous cyst in it. It was removed over 15 years ago. Dr. asked me if I wanted him to pop it (once it was removed). I said "No, can I take it home". Well, it still sits in a sealed jar in my medicine cabinet. Also wanted to take home my "Concretions" -- calcium deposit from inside of eyelid -- that was removed yesterday, however, it was inadvertantly dropped.
Some people collect figurines; I collect things removed from my body. ROTFLMCAO!!!!!

That's um . . . interesting, catt.

I'm going to slowly back away now . . .

Perhaps you should collect figurines after all, catt.

Too bad you couldn't keep those calcium deposits that dropped on the floor. That would be gross . . .

You'll never hear the end of this, Catt. You realize that right?

I seriously didn't think that it was a big deal.
Gotta tell ya, it all started when I had my first child surgically removed from my body. I decided then that I would keep most things removed from me.

Well, since you are a frequent contributor to Lens 101, and you've posted pictures, and you seem to have a well-developed sense of humor, that's a recipe for disaster on a site like this.

Going back to the original question on this thread, you never said whether or not you subscribe to the "five second rule" when it comes to contact lenses. You just said "Pick it up, clean it up and put it in." I take it that applies no matter how long your contact lens has been on the floor?

Well, since soft contact lenses tend to dry out and shrivel up rather quickly, that obviously would be the deal breaker for me. However, if I found one, say after 15/20 minutes or so, and it appeared to be undamaged, sure I would clean it especially well and use it.

Am not sure what you mean by your below quoted sentence???? Especially since I have "curbed my catt tongue" quite a bit in recent months. Or at least I thought I had. Maybe si, maybe no????

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was just saying that you seem like the type of person who would not get offended by a little bit of teasing now and then. You're not new to the site (What . . . two hundred posts and counting?) and so you know that we sometimes tease each other, but we keep it friendly. You know when people are teasing you, it seems, and you usually take it in stride. When you make a comment about saving things that have been removed from your body, you should probably expect some kind of reaction from this bunch, and I'm sure you did.

I've read quite of few of your posts; quite possibly all of them, and you never seemed to me like someone who needed to do a lot of "tongue curbing." Just be your own sweet self and you'll be fine.

EnglishTeacher is right, Catt. You seem to put up good posts, so don't worry about what you write. Just remember that this is a family-friendly site. Things posted here should be appropriate for the whole family, and they should be friendly. Teasing is one thing, personal attacks are something else entirely.
