Default Are 1 Day Accuvue Better than Glasses For Teens?

Teenagers are odd creatures. Parents of teens can tell you that. Would a daily disposable contact lens like 1 Day Acuvue be a good choice for them?

On the one hand, teens tend to react very negatively to glasses because they change your looks. On the other hand, teens have so much going on in life, that sometimes they can't be trusted to take care of contact lenses like they should. At least with a daily disposable the only thing that you really have to worry about is them sleeping in them.

Let's hear from some teens and parents of teens.

My son feels very comfortable in his, because he did feel awkward in his glasses. He is aware he has to take them out every day, because if he doesnt I will be putting him straight back into his regular glasses.

Depending on who the child is and what is comfortable for him/her, is the only way to tell what works best. Everyone's different.

I think eyeglasses is better for teens. A design and color according to his looks and personality will make convincing a little easier.

some of teens are fun of wearing contacts or maybe its more on they like to be in or to be in fashion, but eyeglasses are cool also. just up to the preference of the user right?

Its a case to case basis... depending to the one who will wear it.Maybe for a starter yes... teens change their mind easily. it will be really good if they will try it and see how they will feel about it.

That sounds like a pretty good way to go. "If you don't like taking care of your contact lenses, you can always go back to your glasses."

Wow. Thank you everybody for your help. It sounds like the very technical answer my chemistry professor would often give: "It depends."

Yes, psimonk. Everyone is different. Do you know any teens who wear either 1-Day Acuvue contacts or glasses? Do you know the reason why they chose the lenses they did?

No, Ace. I'm afraid I don't have any children and I'm a little too old to be hanging out with teenagers.

Well, there goes that avenue of research.

It looks like we have plenty of others who have experience with teenagers and their contact lenses.

I would guess that opticians would favour disposable daily soft lenses for teenagers and preferably a high Dk lens material (high oxygen permeable lens), though I think at present there is only one on the market and that is probably in the UK, not the US.

The other factor an optician may consider is RGP lenses, which may or may not slow down the rate of change in myopia as a teenager grows up. My son was fitted with RGP lenses, but his eye sight still changed quite a bit (though perhaps less than it would have if he was wearing spectacles or soft lenses).

How about 1-Day Acuvue, since that is the section we find ourselves in?

Well '1 Day Acuvue' may suit but it's not a silicone hydrogel lens. It's a case of cost, how long you want to wear the lenses, comfort, etc.

When you say "how long you want to wear the lenses" do you mean long-term, as in "until I'm 18" or short term, as in one day versus one week or 1 month?

I was thinking of how many hours/day. i.e. how oxygen permeable the lenses are. Of course some silicone hydrogel lenses may be OK to wear for a week or a month with only minor breaks if your eye care specialist agrees.

Does your son still wear the RGP lenses? How is his vision? Has it settled down now?

Yes ICU2, he is still wearing them. I'm not sure what ones he wears, though they are Boston lenses. He doesn't feel them if he doesn't think about them. Not sure if they are ultra gas permeable/latest technology as he mentioned wearing them overnight at one point.

He is in the German Military Marine Service at present, so it can cause problems with shifts/duty service when the ship is steaming (6 hours on/6 hours off) and then he is not allowed to wear contact lenses if using certain types of equipment - breathing apparatus for fire fighting, etc. etc. Possibly monthly silicone hydrogel soft lenses, probably toric, would be a good choice for him now, though I think his eyesight won't yet have fully stabilised.

I'm glad that Son of Knotlob is doing well with his military service in contact lenses. From this posting, though, it sounds like he doesn't get much chance to wear them.
