I've recently started wearing Proclears after about 15 years of wearing Preference Torics (also from CooperVision). I found this forum by typing "proclear XR lenses fragile" in Google, so you can guess what my experience has been. I'm two weeks into a one-year prescription for monthly disposables, and have already torn through three lenses. That's on top of the two lenses that ripped while I was trying the sample pairs.
The difference in my case from some of the other posters is that I have two different types of Proclears. In my right eye I'm wearing regular Proclear Toric. In my left eye I'm wearing Proclear XR. It's that "XR" that seems to make all the difference. ONLY my left lenses are ripping.
Until a month ago, I think I had one torn lens in the last 6 or 7 years. I've had 5 in the last 30 days with Proclear XR. I thought it might be that the lenses needed to be handled more gently during cleaning. When being gentle failed, I gave up cleaning the left lens altogether, and just put it into solution at night. The next morning I found the left lens torn in half in the storage container. I thought the problem might be the enzyme drops I added to the storage solution, so I stopped adding enzyme drops. (I figured the lenses couldn't accumulate too much protein with an average life expectancy of 3 days apiece.) No luck.
Meanwhile, the right lens (the ordinary Proclear) seems to endure just fine.
I called my doctor the other day, and he's going to try a different brand of lens. He did point out that the Proclear XR is very thin to permit more oxygen flow. But the lenses can't help much if they've disintegrated.
Really this is just an economic problem. I would LOVE to be able to wear daily disposables. Turns out I actually HAVE daily disposables. Unfortunately, they cost 30X the price of intentionally disposable daily lenses.
Note to the Proclear people: I would gladly stay with your lenses if you can get the price down to support 3 lenses per week.
