Default Camping

I sometimes camp with my contacts during the spring, summer, or fall. When water is hard to find, or of questionable quality, is it better to leave them in overnight or to take them out and "clean" them as best you can anyway?

Default Camping With Contacts

You're right about the "questionable quality" of water, even in those cool, clear mountain streams that seem to be a prerequisite in camp sites. I'm assuming you've prepared for a few days of getting back to nature but you somehow neglected to pack your contact cleaning supplies. Whatever you do, don't clean your contacts in your mouth. There's a News Archive on this web site with horror stories about a boxer who got a nasty infection after he tried to clean his contact lens in his mouth. My personal, non-professional opinion would be to leave your contacts out and watch out for those trees until you get home to your cleaning solution. I hope you have someone camping with you who can describe the breathtaking vistas around you as you squint.

You should on no account use water to clean your contacts before putting them in your eye. Always use your recommended lens solutions, which are sterile.

If you are worried about getting your hands clean when wild camping (i.e. outside a paying campsite) then if you don't have immediate access to soap and water, I think you should buy some alcohol based cleaning wipes or similar to sterilise/clean your hands.

The problem I have always had with wild camping is that when I put the lenses in my hand to give them a quick rub with lens solution prior to putting them in my eye, is that, a lot of dirt seems to come out of the pores in my hand. It just takes a little longer and more care to put the lenses in.

Absolutely! No problem with winter camping - provided you have decent gear - none of these WalMart specials tents for $20 unless you want to wake up in the middle of the night to find the tent has collapsed from weight of snow or has blown away .

Have you heard this one?

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. As they lay down for the night, the fire dwindling nearby, Holmes said: "Watson, look up and tell me what you see".

Watson said "I see a fantastic panorama of countless of stars".

Holmes: "And what does that tell you?"

Watson: "Astronomically, it suggests to me that if there are billions of other galaxies that have roughly similar stellar population densities as represented by my view, that, potentially, trillions of planets may be associated with such a galactic and, therefore, stellar population. Allowing for similar chemical distribution throughout the cosmos it may be reasonably implied that life-and possibly intelligent life-may well fill the universe.

Also, being a believer, theologically, it tells me that the vastness of space may be yet another suggestion of the greatness of God and that we are small and insignificant.

Meteorologically, the blackness of the sky and the crispness of the stellar images tells me that there is low humidity and stable air and therefore we are most likely to enjoy a beautiful day tomorrow.

Why? - What does it tell you, Mr. Holmes?"

Holmes: "Someone stole our tent".

Not an outdoorsy person, huh? It's just as well. The Great Indoors are better for contact lens health and security.

Would that mean that Sherlock Holmes and camping are even older?

Love that Magic 8 Ball illustration. It makes your position on camping quite clear.
