Protein buildup

I have been wearing the Acuvue Advance toric lenses, but have a horrible time with protein buildup (I think). I normally can only wear them about 2 - 4 days before my left eye gets a cresent moon shape of protein buildup on it and then my vision is blurred off and on - which causes headaches while working on the computer. I use a cleaner that B & L suggested, but I still have this problem. With the new ones I just rec'd, I got the buildup the same day I put them in. I have told my Dr., but he hasn't helped at all. Should I try a different toric lens? Does anyone else have this problem?

What solution are you using? You might want to look at changing solutions, as some are better than others for particular brands of contacts and/or eye chemistry. I am wearing the same contacts and find that with Opti-Free Express , I don't have a significant problem of protein build-up, although I know if I try to wear them for too long in a day, but they are fine the next day.

Also make sure that if you are using a no rub solution that your rub them anyway, to make sure you remove any build-up.

Excellent advice, the mechanical rubbing of the lens helps to break down any protein build-up better than any of the chemical reactions caused by the solution. Combining both chemical and mechanical solutions should help you overcome this issue.

Careful with solutions, silicone hydrogels and HEMA based hydrogels (most other soft lenses) are not the same and the solutions can react differently. The FDA has approved:

1. Optifree Express - Multipurpose
2. ClearCare - Hydrogen Peroxide
3. Aquify 5 minute - Multipurpose

Their have been more solutions approved since this list, but I would recommend that you make sure to consult with your doctor before switching solutions and get his/her approval or at least let him/her know so that if their are any contraindications they get the opportunity to let you know before you ruin your lenses.
