Hi everyone, I'm 26 from Indonesia, have been struggling in finding the right contacts for my astigmatism. Have tried the regular ones, 1-year toric and last one, Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism.
Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism doesn't help me at all and it's dangerous when I have to drive. When my eyes are steady n just looking straight, I have perfect vision just like when I'm wearing eyeglasses, but once I move my eyes, it gets dry and loses its focus! This product is not exactly cheap in Indonesia, so I'm totally disappointed with it especially when I already bought six pairs (I had to purchase 2 boxes)!!! I happened across your posting here and noticed it's been here for about a year and a half. Have you gotten any relief from a toric lens that fits properly? |

Secondly, mica_ramel says that he or she is fine when looking straight ahead. The problem comes with looking to the sides, and when that happens there are no "pains" but rather dryness and loss of focus. I think you may just benefit from a different brand of contact lenses, kuziakin. Might I recommend Air Optix for Astigmatism? "[My eye doctor] gave me the Air Optix toric contact lenses to try on, and they were like contact lens heaven!! I immediately could tell the difference. They stay moist all day and no 'floating'. I am glad I did not have to go through a bunch of contacts to get them!" http://www.lens.com/contact-lenses/lens545.asp |

Do a search on Mr. Bates here on this site. It seems that he has been involved in some "research" that has led him to some highly questionable conclusions. In short, don't waste any money on the "Bates Method." To call him a "scientist" would be generous.

For the rest of you, read this excerpt from quackwatch.com: "Contrary to scientific fact, Bates taught that errors of refraction are due, not to the basic shape of the eyeball or the structure of the lens, but to a functional and therefore curable derangement in the action of the muscles on the outside of the eyeball. All defects in vision, he said, were caused by eyestrain and nervous tension; and perfect vision could be achieved by relaxing the eyes completely. Bates warned that eyeglasses cause the vision to deteriorate; he also deplored the use of sunglasses. Bates claimed his exercises could correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia (the inability of older people to focus their eyes on nearby objects). They could also cure such diseases as cataracts, eye infections, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. His exercises included palming (covering the eyes and attempting to see blackness) and shifting or swinging the gaze from object to object. It should be obvious that these exercises cannot influence eyesight disorders as Bates claimed. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia result from inborn and acquired characteristics of the lens and the eyeball—which no exercise can change. As for eye diseases, the only thing the exercises can do is delay proper medical or surgical treatment and result in permanent impairment of vision. The claims Bates made in advertising his book were so dubious that in 1929 the Federal Trade Commission issued a complaint against him for advertising 'falsely or misleadingly.'" http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/eyequack.html No one in the medical community takes the Bates Method seriously any more. |
