Some history:
I am near sighted and have astigmatism. I used to only need glasses when looking at the blackboard in high school, then it eventually got to the point where I needed them almost all the time. My eyesight isn't horrible, but I need to wear glasses now 24/7 for precise vision. I tried contacts in middle school and was terrible and getting them in and out, and just settled for glasses. Well in 2008 and now at 23 years old, I wanted to try contacts again. I became a pro with them, getting them in and out no problem, wearing them while napping, occasionally even sleeping in them. Wearing them to work, wearing them wherever. I dug the non-glasses look and was all about it. Friends didn't even recognize me without glasses. No issues for about a year. AND THEN AFTER 1 FULL YEAR LATER Boom, it hit me like a sack of bricks. Bloodshot, irritated, red, itchy eyes. First it started as no contact use for more than 6-8 hours...Then 4-5 hours..Then 2-3 hours tops, and then I'm wanting to rip them out soon as they are in. I made the mistake of sleeping in them for about 3-4 hours on the day it hit me, and when I woke up I couldn't open my eyes in daylight whatsoever. COMPLETELY red, I'm serious, both my entire eyes were entirely red. The absolute worst physical pain ive ever been in my life. I couldn't be in any light, and almost had to wear sunglasses the entire time at work just to be comfortable. (AND I WORK RETAIL!) (Sorry for this long story I want to get all the details out) Went to my normal doctor, and she saw my eyes and was alerted. Put the liquid on my eyes and did the black light test with the lights off. Saw all kinds of damage and said to stop wearing contacts for 2 weeks and use these special drops (im not sure what was in it, but this was CRACK for the eyes, felt sooooo good getting drops). Stopped using them for about a month. Threw them back in for a party I went to, BOOM, RED, IRRITATED, RED BLOTCHES around where the ends of the contact touches my eye. At this point I went to an actual eye doctor and was diagnosed with "dry eye". I was given special drops and told not to wear contacts for 3 weeks and to apply these drops 3x a day until the drops are gone. Did it like he said, and my eyes are still screwed up! Ive been using Acuvue Advance w/Astigmatism the entire time, and wore them again tonight. This is was the last straw, and I need to find out what is going on with me! If I wear my contacts AT ALL, especially for more than 2-3 hours, my eyes develop red blotches around the radius of the contact. It hurts me badly and I just get upset because of these things. How could they be fine for over a year, and then one day irritate my eyes severely as soon as they are put in?!!? The only thing I do more than at that time was I drink alcohol more and am around smoke, but being around smoke doesn't necessarily make it bad because my eyes get irritated without being around it as well if the contacts are in. Wearing glasses like I am now there is no issues with my eyes ever. Can someone help me? Am I just stuck with newly acquired "Dry Eye"? Is there a contact I can try that may be different? My parents are convinced its a newly acquired allergy, and im just at my ropes end here, Any advice is welcomed! Steve |
