Question Disposable lens and preservatives

I would like to wear a daily disposable lens, but I am allergic to preservatives. Can I rinse the daily lens with a preservative free saline or won't that help?

Hi paws. It's good to have you here.

Yes, you can rinse your contact lenses with preservative free saline:

Some commercial saline solutions use preservatives to slow the growth of bacteria after the container is opened . . . Unfortunately, some people are sensitive to the preservatives used in these solutions and can develop eye irritation following the use of preserved solutions. For these people, there are preservative-free, sterile saline solutions.

Preservative-free commercial saline solutions solve the problem of sensitivity; but, after opening, preservative-free solutions can become contaminated more quickly than preserved solutions. Preservative-free solutions come in unit doses, spray cans, and standard bottles. Unit-dose (single-use) saline provides the greatest margin of safety but is also the most expensive. The unit-dose vials must be discarded after one use, even if solution remains in the vial. Spray cans are economical and provide multiple usage. Care should be taken not to contaminate the tip by touching it. Larger bottles of preservative-free solution tend to become contaminated and generally should be replaced every two weeks or as recommended by the manufacturer. An alternative to preservative-free commercial saline solutions for patients who are sensitive to preservatives are the saline solutions for sensitive eyes. These are preserved and thus more convenient to use, but are specially formulated with preservatives and less likely to cause irritation in the susceptible patient.

Lens 101 has been very helpful. Thank you. I am now deciding between daily disposables, Optix Aqua, and will try the Proclear Compatibles. My optometrist is still giving me trial lenses. It seems my eyes are quite sensitive. By reading Lens 101 I now can ask more informative questions.

Hi paws. I'm so glad that this site has helped you. So many times someone will post a question, I'll answer it, and I never hear back. It's not that I want someone to tell me how helpful and wonderful I am, I just wonder if I helped at all. At least bettydaviseyes knows that he or she has helped someone.

Hey Paws,

I too have sensitive eyes/allergies and some solutions cause my eyes to get red and irritated. I've gone to using B&L Sensitive Eyes saline rinsing solution before putting my contacts in my eyes! It has made a difference and my eyes aren't so irritated.

So the Bausch and Lomb Sensitive Eyes did the trick for you, did it? Would you recommend it to others on Lens 101?

Timetraveler,

Yes, the B&L Sensitive eyes helped my eyes! My allergies are so bad right now, that even my optifree has been burning my eyes! So I went out and searched for a perservative free sensitive eyes saline and found the B&L. It really helps to thouroughly rinse your lenses front and back with this solution before inserting them! Less irritation and burning. Although, we just changed my allergy and ashtma meds, so I am hoping in a few weeks that my eyes will be semi normal and not so sensitive/dry. But, i'll definitely still use the B&L sensitive eyes saline. And yes, I would recommend them to lens 101 users.

Did you get that everybody? Bausch & Lomb Sensitive Eyes is good stuff.

Thanks, timeraveller and thank you Red, for providing all that valuable information in that post. I'm seeing your name a lot today. You've been busy. That's good. Keep it up, and I hope your eyes feel better soon.

thank you, I love it here! I wish I had know about this site yearssss ago! Would have saved me a lot of time and energy, and I could have found a better contact than the one my last doc decided he would put me in without me having a say in it. Plus, im a social worker by nature, so it's my duty to help others and advocate, where i'm needed

I just started the med today (has to be on empty tummy), and I have to take BID, so I hope I feel better soon...it takes about 1-2 weeks to feel the full benefit! I may look into rx or otc eye drops for occular allergies tio prevent the mucuous in my eyes

Still trying out lenses. I like the Biofinity, but the right eye is not fitting comfortably. I think I will ask for the Avaira next week. The Trueye material may not be a fit. I seem to have burning after they are removed. I have the Acuvue Moist which I will try soon. I'm not sure why I was given them since my eyes do better with the higher oxygen count. Thanks for asking how i am doing.

I'm liking the Acuvue 1 Day Moist. They are the most comfortable pair I've worn so far. It's been 7 hours for the first day, and all is well.

Great, that's good to know. In one of your previous posts you sounded a bit unsure of the 1 Day Acuvue Moist lenses. It's a good thing you gave them a try anyway.

What about the others you talked about then? Avaira and the Trueye contacts? Did either of those work for you?
