Default contacts always uncomfortable!! help!

Every year I go for an eye exam and once again give contacts a try. I used to wear contacts about 13 years ago and remember how uncomfortable they were for the first week or two. I was constantly aware of the lenses in my eyes, and one day that feeling went away and they felt awesome. For what ever reason that i cannot recall i stopped wearing contacts. I have been trying to wear them again for at least 5 to 6 years. I have gone through so many brands and nothing is comfortable I am constantly aware that they are in my eyes , they feel dry, a bit of burning , constantly blinking, etc. My eye doctor is very good with ordering me pretty much every brand of contact that there is. This year i decided that i am forcing myself to keep them in my eyes during the day for at least a week and a half to see if that sensation will dissapear. My question is, is it possible that i have very sensitive eyes and that it takes me a long time to
" break them in" or can i not just wear contacts. the eye dr. says there is no reason for me to not be able to wear contacts. Also, i do have astygmastism in my left eye, but neither eye is ever comfortable. thank you!!

Hi there, jconey. Sorry about your contact lens discomfort. Looking at your post, it seems that you're having a tremendously hard time wearing contact lenses, even though your eye doctor says that you should be able to wear them just fine. My first thought is that a different doctor may be able to a) finally fit you with contact lenses that are comfortable, or b) tell you why you can't be fitted with comfortable lenses. Ask around and see if someone knows of a different doctor you can see.

Is that right? Wow, that's too bad. Many times a new doctor with a fresh perspective will help figure these types of things out. These three doctors aren't working together in the same office or medical group or anything, are they?

Sorry, just trying to rule out the most obvious explanations first.

Nope all different doctors within their own practices. I've stuck with my last Dr for a while now because I really like him. he really does seem perplexed and want to help. Even if I go in for a routine eye exam with no contact fitting he will give me a pair of contacts just to try

Oh, hi jconey. That was fast.

About your reply, isn't it strange that the fact that your eye doctor seems "perplexed" is somehow comforting?

Yeah, it's kind of comforting, because then I don't feel like so much of a fool. On the other hand, I might have something really serious going on if my doctor can't even figure it out.

That or my doctor isn't as well qualified as I'd like . . .

Yeah, it might be a bad sign if he says "Sit down, numbskull!"

Hey thanks for all your help guys.... Lol .. not so much. I was pretty much just looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience with having sensitive eyes to the point that you can always feel that sensation of contacts. Like I said I've been to many drs. And contacts are never comfortable.

Have you begun your program of--as you put it--"forcing [yourself] to keep them in [your]eyes during the day for at least a week and a half to see if that sensation will disappear"?

Perhaps you should stick with glasses. What do you think? Glasses can be attractive.

Go ahead. Do a picture search for "cats wearing glasses" and try not to crack a smile.

Jconey101: I found this forum because I was having very similar problems. It has always been hard to fit me for contacts. I have astigmatism and my first Dr put me in spherical contacts. My eyes hurt constantly and I could always feel the pinch. I used to think I would just get used to it... never did.

Then I finally found an eye Doctor that placed me into torics for the astigmatism. No more pinch, but I ALWAYS felt them on the eyes. I felt them move when I blinked. I even used to see the brand marker on the Bausch and Lomb contacts, but the eye doctor told me that was impossible. I could actually blink, watch it move, and watch it move back into place. I guess not everyone is the same right?

I will tell you though that just recently I tried the Biofinity contacts from Coopervision. They are freaking great. The first contacts I can wear without feeling them for up to 8 hours. I use it with the OptiFresh Pure Moist solution and I am finally in love with contacts. You should ask your doc about them. And there is a thread on this forum as well that is REALLY REALLY helpful.

But, I just wanted to reply to you because I literally have "felt your pain". Eye docs always seemed perplexed as to why. This was the solution for me, after 15 years of contacts and at least 8 different brands/types.

That's a question that only you and your doctor can answer for sure, I think.

Acuvue 2 are thinner lenses which may make them move more
