Default Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism in One Eye Only

For what reasons would someone wear an Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism contact lens in one eye, but something different on the other?

It depends on the severity of astigmatism, which can be different for each eye. My optometrist has prescribed the Oasys Astigmatism lens for my R eye only, as she said the L side does not have astigmatism to the degree that a toric lens is needed. I have a regular Oasys lens prescribed for that side.

I wear Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism in my right eye, and Proclear Multifocals in my left eye, to give me "reading" ability. So essentially, one is for distance, and the other for reading. Took some getting used to originally, but now that I'm used to it, it's working out rather well.

Maybe you should get your eyes checked again.

Thanks bcwlee. So you're saying that your astigmatism is only corrected in your right eye because it's so mild in your left, is that correct?

OK cool. So what's it like only wearing one toric lens? What sort of challenges does this present? Did you ever put it in the wrong eye? ;-(

I don't wear toric lenses, but I can't resist butting in.

If you didn't know, toric lenses are weighted so that they always sit on your eyes in the same position. The weighted part is a teensy bit thicker than the rest of the lens, so I bet that takes a little getting used to.

That sounds useful for lenses in general. Why don't they have all lenses do that, instead of only for astigmatism?

With other kinds of contact lenses, it doesn't matter if they rotate. If their contact lenses swivel a little bit clockwise or counterclockwise, then a person with astigmatism couldn't see clearly.

Default Another multi brand wearer here!

I have the same deal - Acuvue Oasis for Astigmatism in the right eye, Air Optix multifocal in the other eye. I am brand new to contacts and have dealt with the astigmatism all my life are probably two good reasons why it doesn't bug me at all. Plus there's the unexpected bonus in the multi brand scenario of two different handling tints so I am even less likely to mix them up when groggy in the am!

If there is a downside its that the schedules are not the same - Oasis is a 2 wk lens and the Optix is a 1 month lens but I guess I can keep doing the algebra without too much trouble.

How do you keep from replacing your different contacts on the wrong schedule? Did you ever keep the Oasys in for a month or throw a way an Air Optix after two weeks?

Hi Mamabear - I have many years of lens wearing ahead of me hopefully so disclaimer -- past performance on mix ups is probably not an indicator of future results

The lenses are so different shapewise and color wise which really helps- the Air Optix mutlifocal is stiffer/springier and more aqua tint, and the material definitely feels different on the eye - slightly more natural/airy if that makes sense. The oasys Toric is blue, floppy, and I can see the thicker ballast parts on it I think plus it feels wetter and thicker on the eye. I can tell them apart easily in the palm of my hand too

Also I keep an extra lens case in rotation so when I am ready to open a fresh "midcycle" oasys lens I will take the old one out of clear care in the am as normal but put it straight into the extra case by itself w MPS for a day or 2 as a precaution before chucking it so I can roll back if I need to. I got into this habit during trials because they had me roll through several monovision combos to find the ideal one. Strangely the air optix toric was never in the mix, not sure why not.

I got a couple of lens timer apps for my iPhone too but havent played with those yet hopefully I can find one that will support my weird setup

Are you dealing with the same thing?

"Lens timer apps"? How cool is that? Are they specifically designed for that purpose? I think your friends at Lens 101 might want to know more about that.

I don't have an iPhone, so it really wouldn't do me any good.

Default Lens timer apps for mono vision on different scheds

Hi Jedi - the lens timer apps are pretty cool ideas - would guess that they are available for all kinds of smartphones and computer os platforms too, not just iphone. I have downloaded a couple - will do a new post on the lens care topic about them.
I was also dumb not to mention the accuminder email service from J and J that will text you or email you when you are supposed to change. I signed up for it - will see - no pun intended!!

Thanks for the information about the Acuminder page. It's part of the Acuvue web site and here's part of what it says.

Getting set up is easy.

1. CREATE AN ACCOUNT
Answer a few quick questions and you'll be on your way.

2. CUSTOMIZE IT
Choose how and when you'd like to receive your reminders.
Get alerts via:
Text message
Email

3. SET IT AND GO
Is everything just right? You can always change it later.

It's all right here: https://www.acuvue.com/home-acuminder.htm

Thanks for the instructions, BigJim. It really does look easy.

Can someone show us an example of what the text message and email reminders look like?

Sorry. I searched but could not find an example of a text message or email reminding a customer to replace their contact lenses. Not even on the Acuvue website where you can set up your Acuminder account.
