Default oasys allergy?

I have been a contacts wearer for almost five years, and until very recently never had much of a problem with them. However, since I've switched to Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear, that has significantly changed.

I went to my eye doctor about four months ago, because my eyes had become somewhat dry and irritated when I wore my contacts (at this time, I was wearing Biomedics 55). My doctor said the problem was due to a lack of oxygen and moisture to my eyes, and prescribed me with Oasys. When I tried them for the first week or so, I loved them. I couldn't even tell I was wearing them, and had no irritation.

However, shortly after, I woke up one morning with my right eye swollen and crusted shut. The doctor said it was a bacterial eye infection, prescribed me drops, and it vanished within about one week. I went back to wearing my Oasys, and started to notice a difference.

I could not wear my contacts for more than a few hours before my eyes appeared somewhat bloodshot--not as bloodshot as one with pinkeye, but bloodshot nonetheless. I simply tried wearing them for lesser periods of time, and wearing my glasses at night. This helped somewhat, but I couldn't help but wonder why this was happening, since Oasys were supposed to be the best out there. Then, about a week ago, I noticed that my right eye would be watery every morning when I got up. It usually went away, but would get worse if I wore eye makeup or wore my contacts for a long day. Then, this morning, I woke up with a bright red right eye and watery discharge coming from it. I went to the doctor, who again told me I had an eye infection, but whether it was bacterial or viral she didn't know. She prescribed me eye drops, but before I even started them, my eye went back to normal almost immediately after wearing my glasses instead of contacts. No redness, water, itching, no symptoms. If anyone can give me any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I've seen online that GPC is sometimes associated with these contacts, and am considering switching if they are the culprit of these issues... I want to protect my eyesight. :/

Thanks,

Ginger

Hello Ginger

Welcome to the forum and we are all sorry to hear about your problems.

It sounds as if you have an allergy or sensitivity issue with either the Oasys Lenses or the contact lens solutions you are using.

(I am assuming that you don't have infected make-up since you said the problem went away when you went back to glasses). But make-up is known as a source of bacteria, especially if old or shared and if your problems were bacterial rather than allergy related.

What lens solutions are you using at present? Clear Care disinfection/cleaner is often recommended (peroxide one step system) as it is free from the preservatives, which often cause problems. I suggest you try Clear Care and try and find preservative free versions of any other solutions that you use.

Otherwise, you may need to consider switching to an alternative contact lens material. Some people have sensitivities to some of the silicone hydrogel lens materials.

Do let us know how you get on.

Hi Ginger. Nice to meet you, I just wish it was under better circumstances.

Judging by your description of your eye feeling better when you switched to glasses, I'd say there was some kind of allergic reaction going on. It could be your contacts themselves, or maybe the product you're using to disinfect them. Perhaps you should try the Clear Care like Knotlob suggested. If you still have symptoms, then maybe you should try a different brand of contacts. Oasys may be "the best out there" for most people, but that doesn't mean they're the best for you.
I wish you well, and I hope to read a good report from you soon.

Hopefully Ginger's okay and that's the reason we haven't heard anything back yet.
