Default Sudden Discomfort?

Hi everyone,

I've been wearing contact lenses for 3+ years now. Just last week my left eye started feeling uncomfortable with its lens and I was noticing a lot of blurry vision and slippage. My eye got a little irritated by having to last the whole day like this and when I finally took the lens off, it felt as if something was stuck in my eye. Nothing was in there as the lens came out complete. For 2 days I didn't wear my lenses as I still felt like something was there and I was having a lot of rheum. I put my lenses back in today and I'm having the same problem again with my left eye. What is this??

Hi Aspartame. Welcome aboard.

I don't want to diagnose you via the Internet, but I can give you suggestions. I did a Google search for your symptoms and here are some possible causes:

Bacterial conjunctivitis

Blepharitis

Corneal abrasion

Eye allergy

Hopefully that will help you to narrow it down a little bit. None of those things are horrible, although a corneal abrasion may leave a scar.

Tiger's got some good suggestions there. It sounds to me like either bacterial conjunctivitis or blepharitis. See your doctor to make sure.

Are you okay, Aspartame?

I've got some of that in my Diet Dr. Pepper right here.

I only wish I had one of these . . .

How are you, Apertame? Have you been wearing those Acuvue Oasys lenses comfortably now?

Well Aspartame's continued silence can mean one of two things. Three things, actually. One is that he or she is feeling much better, or that things haven't changed all that much.

The third alternative is that Aspartame is feeling much worse . . .

I had similar issues and it ended up being GPC or Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis. Unfortunately, mine went on for close to 6 months. I have -.50 uncorrected cyl in my right eye, and I assumed my slippage and whatnot was due to that. Yeah, no. I had "squid eye" as my doc said. I had to stop wearing my contacts for a good month and a half, taking eye drops every day, and at this point I'm still not back to my 2 week lenses yet, I'm still in dailies. Obviously I let mine go ridiculously long because I didn't realize what was going on, but I'd definitely get that looked at.

On a side note, that was the first time I've ever had anyone turn my eyelids inside out and I almost vomited on the doc. Grossest. Feeling. Ever.

Hope everything works out well for you!

Aw man, I just got done looking at a picture of a very attractive new member of Lens 101, and then I have to read a post that mentions vomiting. Must be Monday.

What's "squid eye," MrsFarrow?

"The inside of the eyelids and the sclera (the "white of the eye" ) are covered with a very thin tissue called the conjunctiva. In GPC, the membrane swells in what is called a papillary response. There is increased mucus production, irritation, itching, sometimes photophobia (light sensitivity) and decreased tolerance to contact lens wear. Soft lens wearers may find their lenses moving with the blinking of their eyelids, further irritating the eye and causing even more mucus secretions---creating a cycle of increasing severity of symptoms."

Doesn't really help with the science behind it, and I honestly can't remember what I was told in regards to the specific anatomy of the eye, but pretty much you've got a membrane or little receptors on the inside of your eyelid. What happens with GPC is those get inflamed which causes them to grab the lens and the eye when the lens isn't in. So you've pretty much got a bunch of little suction cups, if you can imagine, inside your eyelid. It doesn't hurt, per se, but it's very irritating. Totally treatable, but depending on your wearing schedule it may take a while. Took me about 2-3 months to really clear it up.

I apologize about the elementary explanation, it's the best I could remember

Hey thanks. I think an elementary explanation is best for someone like me. Now if you'll excuse me, it's time for milk and cookies, and then it's Nap Time!

all of which needs to be seen under a slit lamp microscope...so bring those eyes in to your eye doc!

Yes, I would agree with that. Hopefully Aspartame has seen a doctor by now.

It could be due to the fact that I spelled it "Apertame."

No, I don't think it's your fault, Delta88. Would you refuse to answer if I spelled your screen name "Dela88"?

I'd settle for an ordinary can of Diet Doc right now.

Anybody know what happened to Aspartame, who started this thread?
