Default Acuvue Oasys with OPTIFREE?

I've only been wearing contacts for half a year. I was okay for 3 months. When my doctor prescribed me with the contacts, he also gave me a bottle of contact solution. I think it was RevitaLens. It was going great and when I ran out of the bottle, I went back to see if I can buy a bottle from them & they said they're not selling the solution. So I decided to go to a drugstore and by OPTIFREE since that's the one my sister uses.

When I started using OPTIFREE, I started feeling discomfort, but I sort of just ignored it because I thought it was probably just me not having enough sleep. But after a week of using OPTIFREE, I noticed my eyes started getting red and one day, when I took my contacts off, I noticed it was COMPLETELY BLOODSHOT RED.. I got so scared so I stopped wearing it until the redness went away. It took like about 3 days to go away and while it was going away, I was feeling a lot of burning and stinging in my eye. I could hardly keep it open sometimes. But, then I started wearing it again WITH EXTRA SLEEP and it happened again!!!

So I thought it might've been the contacts problem. But I notice my eyes NEVER gets red when I open a new contact. It's only when I wash it with OPTIFREE or place it into my contact case filled with OPTIFREE.

Is there something in OPTIFREE that might be causing my eyes to burn? My sister has no problem with it. Is there another better recommendation for me to use? I tried to find REVITALENS somewhere but I can't find it anywhere..

Hi lilylee. Welcome to Lens 101 and the world of contact lenses.

What you need is The Staining Grid. It tells you which solutions work best with a given brand of contact lenses. According to the grid, Opti-Free should work well with Acuvue Oasys. However, I found a few that worked even better when they were tested for the staining grid. Those would be:

Unisol 4 Saline
Clear Care
Opti-free Express
Opti-free Replenish
Opti-free PureMoist
Biotrue
Renu Fresh
Renu Sensitive
Complete MPS Easy Rub
Aquify

If the Opti-Free isn't to your liking, you will probably want to start with some of the the more well-known brands here such as Clear Care, Biotrue and Aquify. Let us know if you find something you like.

Thanks for that post, Fresa. I looked up the staining grid and found it but I don't really know what it means, but I will just choose to trust it.

However, I did not know there were so many solutions (that have preservatives so you do not have to clean the lenses) that work with Contact Lenses. So far I've only used OPtiFree PureMoist.

Have been having a problem lately with 2 kinds of lens I was trying, do not think it's the solution, instead suspect I got dust or some kind of moisturizer from my face onto the lens before I put it in my eye.. After I see doc if he rules that out (since I'm going to take the uncomfortable lenses in with me) I might have to change solutions, but I really doubt that's the problem cause the OptiFree Pure Moist worked well for me with 4 diff kinds of lenses for first 6 or 7 weeks of my trials.

But I'm open to any other ideas of what could be the problem. I do have a manual dexterity problem when taking the right lens out, (therefore could have introduced something into my eye I think because of having to try to remove it over and over, washing and rewashing hands, maybe getting dust or something on fingertip) because I need a right shoulder replacement, and think maybe that's partly the problem too.

The Staining Grid is a table that shows you how well a particular brand of contact lenses works with a given brand of solution. Basically you find the brand name of your contact lenses on the left and match it up with the column across the top that has the solution you want to use, then then look at the square where the two meet. If the square is green, then you're good. If it's red, choose a different solution.

It sounds to me like you've made a pretty thorough investigation otherwise. I don't really have anything else to add.
