Default Getting Used to Contacts - When Will I See?

I am new to contacts. Today is my second day. Letters on a page are still a bit blurry, or each letter has a "shadow" or a double. (I hope that makes sense.) At any rate, assuming I put the contacts in correctly, should my vision be crisp by now or does it take a few days for my eyes to adjust? I welcome your insight!

It's hard to say, because everyone is different, but I think in your case you just need a little more time, say another day or two, to get used to wearing those contact lenses. If you're vision is still blurred after two more days, call your eye doctor to discuss it. Then he or she can make some adjustments to your contacts. Let us know when they start correcting you vision properly.

Thanks for your insight. I will wait it out a bit longer. I really want these contacts to work because I see great reviews on them. I will keep you posted.

Great. Thanks. I will. Actually, it's the monovision that my mind is trying to accept I realized. The contacts themselves have become comfortable.

Yeah, I don't know how people can get used to reading with one eye and watching TV with the other. I guess it's not all that unusual though. I hope you're able to put those lenses to good use, Jodi.

Gosh, everyone is sooo nice here. Thanks for everyone's care and support!

Well, my eyesight still isn't great. My eyes go in and out of focus. I go to the optometrist for a check up tomorrow....my one week check up. I hope he gives me another week to see if my eyes will adjust. I've just heard nothing but good things about these contacts. I can't even tell that they are in my eyes (aside from the focus), and I wear them from sun up to sun down. They are so comfortable. I am afraid that no other contacts will be as good. Pray that my eyes adjust! I will let you know what the doctor says.

Hi Jodi.

A lot of time when people say "pray" it's just a figure of speech. I want you to know that I literally said a prayer for you that you would feel better in your contact lenses soon.

You're right, there are a lot of really nice people on this website who are eager to help others with their contact lens, eyeglasses and sunglasses questions. It's a great site.

Well, I put on my contacts this morning. After 7 days of struggling, I could finally see normally..actually better thanks to my contacts! So, I had a great discussion with my doctor today for my one week check up. I told her that my eyes still felt kind of weird, but she told me that my eyes and brain are still adjusting even though my eyesight has improved. We agreed that I will be able to continue using the Air Optix Aqua contacts. Whew! I am thrilled. What a great day! So, it just took time for my eyes and brain to adjust. Just thought you'd like to know!

Wow, thanks for the update. I'm glad your eye doctor was so encouraging.

Last November I got progressive lenses, new glasses. I had worn bifocals for years. It took me SIX WEEKS to get used to them. You're doing great adjusting to the Monovision in a week

I found it easier to adjust to different kinds of contacts than it was to adjust to my glasses with the progressive lenses. They really confused me at first. Part of the problem was only 2 days after I got them, I left the country, so had nobody to ask when I had a question. I was gone for over 3 weeks and all that time I only had the one new pair of glasses. Did not have any older glasses to alleviate the strain either.

Do you suppose you would have had an easier time with those progressive glasses if you were able to communicate with the people around you?

It took you six weeks to get used to the progressive glasses or the bifocals?

Default Progressive Lens in Glasses Challenging

Took me that long to get used to the Progressive Lens in the new glasses I got November 2010. They are good glasses, but were challenging for me at the time.

Two or three days after I got my new glasses, I was in another country, not my own home, had not stayed in that area of the city/country before, did not have all my regular familiar things around me for a visual frame of reference, so to speak. It was pretty confusing trying to see things in a totally different environment, since I did not know what to expect anyway, since I wasn't home.

Now that I've joined this Forum and learned more about vision, I understand a little about why I had such a problem getting used to those. (Never heard of "dominant eye" before this Forum)

I think my glasses are a certain type that has the progressive part of the Lens, which goes down the center, designed with that part a bit wider than other Progressives. Not sure I'm explaining that right. When I asked the doctor, the name of the Progressive Lenses, he wrote down the name: "Freeform" So maybe these are a little different than others I could have gotten? Anyway, I'm fine with them now

After the long and tricky task of getting used to Progressive eyeglass Lenses, it seemed easy & natural when I got some Multifocal contacts, also found the Monovision to have its own special advantages. I like both systems.

Jodi, I hope it just keeps getting better and better for you. I have liked reading about the Air Optix Aqua experience, so please keep up your posts

I could communicate with the people around me! But I did not want to talk about my problem with new glasses! It was my daughter's wedding and I felt the attention should be on her, the groom, and this super special occasion, not my GLASSES!

We had so many more things going on than my adjustment to new glasses. I was very excited to be there again, and knew I would not see her for a long time after that. I made do with the new ones as well as I could, borrowed some readers, & worked the situation pretty well even though it was challenging

I suppose SandiStix thought you were in a foreign country that spoke a different language.
Congratulations on your daughter's wedding. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it, even if you had to borrow some readers.

Well...I am following up. As it turns out, my eyes weren't getting enough oxygen, believe it or not. My eyes would fog up, and I always felt like I had something in my eyes so I was constantly using eye drops to no avail. As a result, my doctor changed my contacts. I am no longer in Air Optix Aqua. I really wanted them to work. Take care!

Oh Jodie, I do hope you will find a lens which is as comfortable and that you can get used to it in less time than Air Optix Aqua, since you've alerady "put some time in" on this trial thing! Do let us know what you may try next! We will be cheering for you.

To Unicorn3: Yes I was in a country where the people do speak another language, and a second "other" language, neither of which are English, but that wasn't a problem. Also my daughter is a nurse there so if I wanted her to be bothered with it I could have asked through her job, however, we were *not* there ----except to celebrate the wedding Thank you for the good wishes!

Sorry the Air Optix Aqua contact lenses didn't work out for you. So what brand of contact lenses are you wearing now? Have you decided to stick with the monthly replacement schedule?

Hi All!

Thanks for your concern. My optomistrist put me in Biofinity. But after having bloodshot eyes, she determined that the Biofinity ones were drying out my eyes. So, now she has me in Acuvue TruEyes. I started using them yesterday. I have a week to see if they work.

The pressure is on. These must work. She said she is out of options after these since they are the Rolls Royce of contacts.

Has anyone ever heard of someone who cannot wear contacts at all? I hope that isn't my fate.

I wasn't expecting a reply from you so quickly, Jodi.

This forum has lots and lots of posts, but very very few by people who have tried several different kinds of contact lenses and couldn't wear any of them. There's got to be something out there for you. Keep trying.

Hi Jodi. Thanks for spending time in your freed-up schedule here on Lens 101. It's always nice when members stick around instead of just posting once and then disappearing.

That's a very good question. I don't know why anyone would abandon the good people of Lens 101, yet they still do.

I suspect in some cases they post a question, wait a few days, and if they don't get a reply they either leave the forum actively or forget that they posted a question.

Jodi, I hope the new contacts work for you.

If you had bloodshot eyes from the other ones, I wonder if a complete break from wearing contacts might have helped?

Good question CLSC -

My only concern with that is the following. I am trying to adjust to monovision. If I take a break, I am concerned that I would have to start the multiple-week process again. I don't want to start from scratch!

I don't blame you on that, Jodi. I wish you well with the monovison training process.

I, too, see what you mean, Jodi.

When I read about Monovision somewhere a couple of months back, one article I read said the brain needs to get used to "one eye always being slightly out of focus" so when I realized that, I just accepted that there would always be an area in which things would be blurry. It's not hard for me to use one eye for distance and one for closeup in fact I love it, almost more than the Multifocals in which you can see all kinds of distances very clearly.

I love being able to see way far off and very close up, and understand completely about keeping on keeping on.. I just posted a new thread myself about my own struggle with getting the contacts out.. I had to take a break because I was making my right eye so sore with trying to get the lens out that I think I lost some of my initial skill at doing it.

I suppose that would depend on how long of a break you're talking about, If it's only a day or two, you probably won't have to start over again.

It's encouraging to know that people can learn to love monovision contact lenses.

Well, the latest in my search for contacts:

I have found a new optometrist after my old one said I had no more options and my eyes just couldn't adjust to contacts. My new optometrist says that we still have many contacts to try. With monovision, my old optometrist had me seeing in a distance with my right eye and close up with my left. My new optometrist switch them. He also changed the power of the contacts. Basically, he changed everything my old optometrist did. Thank goodness.

Now he has me wearing Acuvue Oasys. I can see clearly for the first time in a month and 4 brands later. I hope it lasts. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Basically, he changed everything my old optometrist did. Thank goodness.

Now he has me wearing Acuvue Oasys. I can see clearly for the first time in a month and 4 brands later. I hope it lasts. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
What great news. Good thing you were persistent.

I'm so glad for you! Good thing it was just a matter of a different doctor. Sometimes that's all you need. Many times people go from one doctor who says "You can only do it this one way, and that's all" to one that says "I've got some ideas we can try." I hope your good vision and comfort continue with those Oasys lenses.
