Sometimes contact lenses become coated with some kind of protein material. Have your ever gotten so bad that they were useless? What did you try to clean them with? Did you get some kind of treatment that made your eye produce less gunk?

You should'nt really get that kind of protein build up in a months wear. I usually wear them for around 6 weeks before I change them. It helps with costs and luckily I don't have any issues with protein build up. I do take them out at night though. I can only tell you how it is for me, the opticians assistant told me off when I said I wear them longer!

I'm glad you told us how it was for you. That's valuable information. I wonder if anyone ever gets severe protein buildup, even after only a month? I think that is basically VAB's question.

I think some people do get bad protein build up, I'm lucky. I'll have to ask my brother but when he wore contacts he suffered from dry eyes and I think his protein build up was high.

Thank you for your reply, Pandy. I hope we'll get your brother's answer soon. I would be good for people to know beforehand that there's a chance that they might have to deal with buildup on their Air Optix.

Well, just rang my brother to get his take on things. He did seem to get bad protein build up and also suffered with dry eyes. This did go on to cause to scarring as he persevered with his lenses too long. We were in Vegas for my wedding and he had no glasses with him so he said looking back he would have given his eyes a break sooner. That coupled with 2 long flights (we're English) meant for some pretty sore eyes when he got back. He is now unable to wear lenses.

Wow, what a roller coaster. You get married and now your bother can't wear contact lenses? Can he go back to lenses someday after he heals, or is he finished with lenses forever?

Yeah, that airplane can get pretty dry, can't it?

I'm sorry about your brother. Is he going to be able to wear contact lenses in the future?

Yep, blame me!

It had been getting bad before the wedding but long flights, two extra weeks when he should have given his eyes a chance to rest took their toll. He cannot wear contacts at all and still gets dry eyes and has to use drops. Luckily glasses suit him and hes not sporty.

Just shows though, if he had done what he should have done sooner he might still have been able to wear contacts.

Wow, sorry about that. So was this all because he wore his contact lenses too long? Did he keep this up for a period of time?

Hiya. His eyes had been drying out before and he said if he had been at home he would have switched to glasses, given his eyes a break and maybe somewhere along the line, and with lenses that let more oxygen in, been able to wear them again.

So by carrying on wearing the lenses they caused slight scarring. Lesson learnt, even if it was'nt really his fault because he was abroad.

I used to have normal soft lenses but by early evening could not wait to take them out. Its because I'm a long term user. Never looked back when the young optician more or less pushed me to have the night and day ones. Love that extra oxygen.

Oh yes. Extra oxygen is a good thing.

Nice smile for someone explaining how to prevent a violent, painful death. It's kind of like the song that says "She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye."

That's right, kids. Keep your contacts clean so the oxygen can flow freely.

What a great site. You're all so concerned about each others safety.
