Default Evan Longoria and Altair Clip On Sunglasses?

Evan Michael Longoria is a third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays. Formerly, Longoria was a star infielder for the Long Beach State college baseball team, the 2005 Cape Cod League MVP, and the 2006 Big West Co-Player of the Year. He made his major league debut for the Rays in 2008 and was named to the American League team for the 2008 MLB All Star Game. Longoria was also named the 2008 American League Rookie of the Year on November 10.
Does anyone know what kind of sunglasses he wears while playing third base in sunny Florida?

I found an article about Mr. Longoria's sunglasses. It said that he wears Nike Sunglasses, and no model name was mentioned. It was mentioned though, that in one game in Denver he wore his Nike shades for one at-bat and "he struck out swinging on a 97mph fastball up in the zone."

Here's what happened next: "In his next at bat in the 3rd inning, Dirtbag was sans shades. This time he struck out on a curve ball in the dirt. He also swung and missed at 97mph fastball up in the zone for strike two.

Longo did single in the 5th and was hit by a pitch in the 7th, both times without the sunglasses. And then in the 9th, he once again struck out without the sunglasses, on a slider in the dirt."

So let that be a lesson to you. Wear your sunglasses when you're batting on a sunny day in Denver.

Thanks for the play-by-play, Lucyfur. He looks good in those shades.

Why do they call him "Dirtbag"?

it took a surprising amount of searching, but I think I have the answer to your question Zoey.

You see, Evan Longoria's alma mater is Long Beach State University. I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a long and storied tradition of academic excellence.

Anyway, apparently the school baseball team is called . . . The Long Beach State Dirtbags. They even have a Dirtbag Nation.

That's California for you . . .

Yeah, I remember someone asking the question: "we don't actually . . . need . . . . California for anything, do we?

That's a funny picture. Do you suppose it's just a coincidence that the word of indifference is coming from the vicinity of Minnesota?

Plus you don't want that squinty picture to be on your baseball card, do you?

Tampa Bay Rays baseball, brought to you by . . . Nike sunglasses.

Let's look at his game again.

Struck out swinging with the sunglasses.
Swung at and missed a fastball. Struck out on a curve ball in the dirt "sans shades."
Single without sunglasses.
Hit by pitch without sunglasses.
Struck out with the sunglasses.

It looks like the only time he got on base was with a single in the fifth and that time he wasn't wearing the sunglasses.
Unless you count the hit-by-pitch in the seventh inning, and again he wasn't wearing sunglasses. Can we really say that the shades made a difference?

Oh, I love baseball talk in November. It's even better in February when I've just about had it with winter.

Of course, the World Series just ended about a month ago, and like 28 other teams, mine was not involved.
