contact lens wearers are being ripped off by up to £190 a year, consumer watchdogs said yesterday.
Which? found that most manufacturers' daily lenses were "virtually identical" to their more expensive weekly or monthly versions. Yet daily lenses cost around £1 per pair, compared with £6 a pair for longer-life ones. Experts, including a lens maker and an optician, tested five brands for the consumer group's magazine. They found that in four cases, with the proper care and precautions, the daily version could be used for as long as the monthly one. However, eye expert Prof Roger Buckley told Which? magazine: "Using daily lenses longer than they have been licensed for is not a good idea at all. If contact lenses are not worn according to professional advice, they are capable of harming, even blinding, the eye."
