Default Charleston Doctor Looking for Fungal Eye Infection Answers

Health officials are seeing a rash of fungal eye infections, especially among users of contact lenses.

Charleston optometrist Dr. Walter Ramsey is attending an emergency meeting in Florida to discuss the problem. "Part of this meeting is to ascertain what is going on" he said as he boarded a flight from Charleston.

The Centers for Disease Control says it has received reports of about 50 cases in 12 states. Doctors believe this strain of fungal eye infection started in Asian but quickly turned toward the United States.

"It first was thought that the cases were in warm climates in Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi, but now there seems to be some cases happening in New England", said Ramsey.

Ramsey believes a patient in his office recently might have had the infection. But he also urges people not to panic. "This is something we must not overreact to and cause panic because we don't know the answers at this time, that's part of the point of this meeting."

Experts dont know why the painful infection seems to be linked with contact lenses.

Doctors say people who use them should always wash their hands thoroughly before touching their eye.
