New Zealand contact lens wearers who use ReNu cleaning solutions are being assured that their eyes are in no immediate danger.
Bausch and Lomb is withdrawing the product in the US, Hong Kong and Singapore following cases of fungal keratitis - a rare fungal infection. Optometrists Association National Director Lesley Fredrickson says ReNu is not being taken off New Zealand shelves and unless they become aware of any problem in New Zealand people should not be alarmed. A media release from Bausch and Lomb today explains that 21 of 28 contact lens wearers who contracted the fungal disease used the ReNu product. However, the company says their testing, reviews, scientific evidence and analysis of the product has not established any type of ReNu solution as the cause. CEO Ronald Zarrella says they have voluntarily decided to withdraw the product.
