CooperVision Inc. has filed a couple of lawsuits against CIBA Vision, Novartis AG’s eye-care unit.
Fairport-based CooperVision is owned and operated by the Cooper Cos. Inc. A complaint, filed in federal district court in Marshall, Texas, alleges that CIBA’s O2Optix contact lenses infringe on two families of CooperVision’s patents. One group of patents relates to innovations that control the “edge characteristics” of some types of contact lenses, while the second family is associated with novel designs for certain types of contact lenses. These include toric lenses used to treat astigmatism, the blurring of vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea, CooperVision said. The company also has filed a suit against CIBA Vision in federal district court in Wilmington, Del. The firm seeks a judicial declaration that its Biofinity line of silicone hydrogel contact lenses does not infringe on certain CIBA Vision patents. The CIBA Vision patents generally relate to a type of silicone hydrogel lens, CooperVision officials said.
