Contact Lens Cleaner Removed From Store Shelves
The maker of a popular contact lens cleaner has asked stores to take its product off the shelves.
Bausch and Lomb, the maker of ReNu Moisture Lock, has already stopped shipping the lens cleaner after federal officials concluded a possible link to an infection in contact lens wearers that can lead to blindness if untreated.
Some big chains, including Walgreens and Wal-Mart, have already removed the product from their shelves.
Health officials remain unsure about the reasons for the connection between the solution and the infection, caused by a fungus called fusarium, but they know many of those with the infections used ReNu.
"Fusarium is a very aggressive fungus and it is difficult to treat medically. Many of the patients that we treat fail medical treatment and require surgery for cure," said Dr. Kathryn Colby, of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
The surgery required to cure the fungal infection is corneal transplant. Already, some of the victims have been required to undergo it and doctors fear many more will.
