Default Spanish doctor invents protective filter for contact lenses

By: thinkSPAIN , Tuesday, April 14, 2009

A Spanish doctor has invented a contact lens filter that can prevent certain types of blindness.

Dr Celia Sánchez Ramos' invention, that blocks the harmful rays of light, has already been recognised on an international level and she has been awarded a number of prizes.

The yellow filter can be used with all types of contact lenses, whether graduated or not and protects against the harmful effects of both natural and artificial light.

Dr Sánchez stressed the fact that despite being yellow, the filters were 'completely invisible' once in place and do not alter colour perception in any way.

Although the eye has a natural protective layer, this degenerates over time and is also lost as a result of cataract operations.

The new filter is aimed at older people who have been operated on for cataracts or who have lost their eyes' natural protective filter ovet the years, but the investigating team stressed that it can also be used as a preventative measure or more specifically for people whose occupations expose them to dangerous levels of light, light solderers.

The lens filter has not yet been produced commercially, but Dr Sánchez Ramos hopes that it will be 'before too long', mentioning that several US companies had already shown an interest in the product, which is simple to use, cheap and invisible.

Dr Sánchez has been awarded the prize for the best inventor in 2009 by the Intellectual Property Organisation, the best Spanish patent and the gold medal for the best healthcare invention.
