Default Bifocals - Old or Nerdy?

I just read a web site that said that bifocal contacts are better than glasses because glasses "[make] you look older or, worse yet, like a nerd."

Is looking like a nerd worse than looking older?

Discuss.

I'd say that both "looks" are pretty subjective and people who are comfortable with themselves will probably not worry about that too much.

I suggest that the term "nerd" itself is out of fashion...

I think that website is out of touch. No line bifocal lenses in cool looking frames can enhance an appearance. It also allows you to change your "look" easily. If you dont like wearing glasses then that is another story. I would go with what makes you comfortable and not what a website says.

There's nothing wrong with wearing bifocals. Most of the time they just look like every other pair of glasses especially if you have the kind that have no lines. I have bifocal glasses with the lines and the lines are very hard to see. Most people don't know that they are there unless they look very closely. If you get a slight tint in the lens the line hardly shows at all.

As for nerdy, people used to say that wearing any kind of glasses were nerdy but glasses now are very trendy. I know some people who wear glasses with plain glass in them because the frames look so nice on them.

Good post skatss. I never thought about getting a slight tint in bifocals to hide the dreaded line.

Don't even get me started on the people who wear fake glasses. Let's just say that when a friend of mine got some fake glasses I asked her if she might want to throw in some fake braces as well.

I have been told that my very expensive, hip, stylish glasses make me look older. 'Nuff said. I am "older" and anything reasonable I can do to look younger, I will. As for nerds, I loved the movies, I don't think it's uncool to be a nerd. Shoot, look at Justin Timberlake in his big, square glasses. Not nerdy, I would say.

Yeah, sure. Justin Timberlake would still be good looking even if he tied a dead mackerel to his head.

Seriously, though, you have a point. I know a very attractive young lady who has a "thing" for nerds.

Bwhahahah! True, true. I think "nerd" is an attitude and a personality type. I don't know if you watch Ugly Betty, but that guy was "nerdy," but really cute. Put some cool frames on him, he'd probably still be nerdy.

And the next time I see JT, I will be picturing him with a dead mackerel on his head. BWAHAHAHA!

Does anyone on the forum have some skill at photo editing?

I tried to find a picture of Mr. Clooney wearing glasses, but I couldn't find one. Doesn't he, like so many other Hollywood types, take out his glasses to read the nominees for awards from that little blue card?

Thank heavens you couldn't find a way to make George look like he has a carp tied to his head...that would have broken my heart. Thanks for trying, though
Oh I'm sure he has cheaters. These people can afford the best eye care, LASIK, great contact lenses, etc., and they deliberately seem to choose the fugliest glasses around. That goes for the ladies (and maybe especially the ladies), too. It makes things interesting.

Gal, I haven't done a search, but I think it's safe to say that you have been the first person to use the phrase "fugliest" in this forum. Congratulations. Here's your mackerel.
