Default Simultaneous Bifocal Contacts

What are simultaneous bifocal contact lenses? I read an article about them, but didn't quite get how they worked.

These are like progressive eye-glasses (which I love)

From All about vision:
http://www.allaboutvision.com/contacts/bifocals.htm#aspheric

"These multifocal contact lens designs work more like progressive eyeglass lenses, where the different prescriptive powers are blended across the lens. Unlike eyeglasses, however, aspheric contact lenses are simultaneous vision lenses, so your visual system must learn to select the proper prescription for the moment.

This is the only type of multifocal contact lens that can be described as "progressive." It's also concentric, like the concentric ring designs, and it has become the most popular type of multifocal contact lens."

Hello DaBrat. Welcome to Lens 101.

Thank you for that good answer to Tiger's question. I appreciate your providing the link, and then summarizing what it says. That gives readers the option of following the link or not.

Keep up the good work.

So "simultaneous" Bifocal Contact Lenses are also known as "aspheric" contact lenses, is that right? They have negative and positive powers that blend smoothly into one another, unlike the sharp demarcation of bifocal contacts?

This "learning to select the proper prescription for the moment." Is it hard to do?

Thanks. I thought so, too. I thought so right now when I saw it again after not seeing it for a while.

Now, about that "selecting the proper prescription" bit, does anyone here know how that works?
