Default Distance Vision Problems With Bifocals

Seems there are a lot of people who are having trouble seeing in the distance with bifocal contact lenses. Is this the sort of thing you can expect when wearing bifocals, or are lots of people being fitted improperly?

Bifocals is different from normal lenses as they are actually two lenses in one. The bottom part is meant for close vision while the upper portion aims for distant focusing. The secret in using bifocals lies in learning to automatically look through the correct part of the lenses. It will take some time to get used to it as the plus segment will magnifies the object, making it difficult to judge the actual distance of the object concerned.

You might also encountered problem when walking down the stairs as you have to look into the correct portion of the lenses.

Some of the problems may also be based on the age of the person. As we get older, the muscles that control focus don't adjust for near to far and back, nearly as quickly as when we are younger.

You are absolutely right. This lack of ability to change focus from distant objects to near one is known as presbyopia which normally starts around 40 years old. So presbyopes (people with presbyopia) usually require correction in both distance and near vision. And this is where bifocal glasses or contact lenses come in. It takes may take more time to get used to bifocal contact lenses as compared to glasses as the lenses sit on top of the cornea.

Thank you all for your replies. So I guess that means that if you're having trouble with bifocal contacts, it's most likely due to your adaptation to the lenses, and not because of a problem with the lenses themselves or the way they fit.

Does that sound right?
