Default What is the Difference?

Some doctors will prescribe a pair of bifocal lenses, while others will prescribe a different lens for each eye with one for seeing things up close, and one for distance.

What is the difference between these two approaches?

Are there reasons one choice might be better than the other?

I'm sure you will get better answers than I can give; mine is only my personal experience. I have multifocals and I am not a candidate for the one-eye-near/one-eye-far method because of my amblyopia. I would imagine that there are several factors that would make people not be able to do it.

The major difference between the two is that with mono-vision you can lose your depth perception and have decreased night vision. I think most eye doctors believe they have a higher success rate with mono-vision. However with the newest lenses to hit the market (like the air optix multifocal )I believe this may be changing.

Thanks petern. Your answer makes sense in that you need both eyes for depth perception, so if you're only using one eye to see in the distance, dept perception will likely be difficult.
Do you have any personal experience with Air Optix Multifocal that you can share?

SandiStix

I have been wearing the air Optix Multifocal lenses for about a month and really like the vision that I am achieving with them. It is reasonably comfortable although not quite as comfortable as the oasys by acuvue. Everything in multifocal contacts have been a trade off so far ie good near vision bad far vision etc. I have tried them all and the air optix is by far the best lens to hit the market. My near and far vision is good and my eyes stay white. I highly recommend them.

I'm glad to read your recommendation for Air Optix Multifocal. Thanks for the consumer review. I think that's my favorite part of Lens 101.
