Default Air Optix Multi

Hi, I just found this site and am very glad to find like users. I've been wearing contact lenses for, like 30 years (OMG has it been that long??). Last year, went to the Focus Night & Days then to the Focus N&D Optix Aquas Monthlies. Didn't have trouble with fit, wear or comfort, but also went with glasses over contacts to be able to read. Didn't really like this as could never keep the glasses adjusted properly to stay far enough from long eyelashes.

This year went to the AirOptix Multifocals. The comfort etc seem ok for now, BUT, they are daily wear (take them out nightly) and vision isns't as good. I don't need the readers, but vision is better with them, and driving sight isn't as good, so am using glasses to correct a mild astigmatism to see better. Eye doc said this is the trade offs.

Has anyone had any other solutions to the need for bi-multi- focal contact lenses? Also, is there an extended wear multi focal contact lense out there??

thanks for any suggestions

Hello there, Lady Taz. I like your screen name. It brings up some interesting mental images.

I'm afraid I don't know very much about multi-focal contact lenses, but if you go to www.lens.com, you might be able to find the information you're looking for. Here's where you will find the bi-focal lenses, but I don't know which ones are extended wear. Good luck and let me know if you find anything you like.

Greetings, Lady Taz.

I bet LP39A did a search for the term "lady taz" in Google. I tried it and I found that same picture.

Hi LadyTaz. Now that you found the website, did you find the extended wear multi focal contact lenses you were looking for?

Don't mind me--I'm just being nosy.

Yes, I did. I'm wearing the Air Optix Multifocal and they are nice, but the only thing I don't like about them is they are daily wear only. I'm not used to taking them out every day and not sleeping in them. One can only hope they will become extended wear in the near future...

Well at least you don't have to clean them. Are they comfortable? Do they give you good, clear vision?

Yes, I do have to clean them every day. I use the Clear Care system with the disk thingey. They are comfortable, just like the Night n Day contacts. Although I find I can't wear them for as long as I did with the Night n Days. Also, If taking a short nap, I find I really need to use eye drops when I wake up. Not much fum if you're flying and sleeping on the plane. Be sure to carry eye drops. The vision is about average, I am used to really crisp, clear vision and since I now require multi focal lenses, I find there is a trade off. I guess you can either wear contacts and have the vision not as good as previous, and/or wear glasses over the contacts (kiinds defeats the purpose of contacts), or go to glasses full time. I'm still trying to find the right combination...

Hi Lady Taz.

You know, I bet when you said that you have "daily wear" contacts Superschwin thought you meant "daily disposables." Those are the ones you wear for one day and then throw them away. You said you have to take them out at night, didn't you?
Anyway, I wish you well with your vision correction. Be patient, sometimes it takes a while to figure out what works best for you.

Right Chelsee, I don't have the daily disposables, I have to take them out and clean them every night.

Yes, that's the one. When you use it, does it overflow and come out the top a few minutes after the top is put on??

Here's something I found on another contact lens forum--that's not as good as Lens 101, of course.

" . . . the problem was the multi-purpose solution I used to rinse the lenses and the case. Unlike saline, multi-purpose solutions have cleaners in them, so when you use them in conjunction with Clear Care (which also has cleaners in it), the result is like putting too much soap in the dishwasher...Suds, suds, and more suds! . . . only use STERILE SALINE, not a multi-purpose solution, to rinse lens and the case."

Does that help?

I use the Aeosep solution that comes with the container. I think the bubbly overflow is from the reaction of the solution to the disk in the cup. Not a big deal, just wondering if anyone else noticed it. I use saline to rinse the lenses before putting them in. Just the plain saline, not the combo rinses.

Do you still have issues with bubbly contact lens solution, Lady Taz?

Yes the bubbles are oxygen. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is broken down into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2) by the catalyst. Absolutely normal and not a problem.

Forgive my ignorance of chemical reactions, but wouldn't H2O2 - H2O = O? Or to put it another way HHOO - HHO = O, not OO? Maybe the catalyst adds an O?

Knotlob I've read most of your posts, and you're a pretty smart guy, so I'm not at all confident in my calculations. Maybe you can tell me where I got it wrong.

OK, I over simplified it. The chemical equation is more clear if I multiply everything by 2. So:

2(H2O2) = 2(H2O) + O2

i.e. 2 molecules of hydrogen peroxide is broken down by the catalyst to yield 2 molecules of water and one molecule of oxygen.

(We don't normally put the brackets in the equation for this reaction, but it is clearer if I do. Also I should use an arrow instead of an 'equals' sign - I once got a telling off in a physics class for that sort of thing ).

Okay, let's try it my way.

HHOO HHOO --> (There's your arrow) HHO HHO OO

Hey, that works! 4 H's and 4 O's on both sides of the arrow.

No, I don't have any other issues/questions. Just was wondering if anyone else noticed the bubbling. Thanks to Kitt and Knotlob for the scientific explanation of what is happening in the solution. I knew the end result was saline though...

Thanks again!

You're not getting graded on your equations here Knotlob. You just do what comes naturally and I think everything will be fine.

Awesome. I'm glad Lens 101 was able to help you. Stick around. I'm sure you'll have some more questions in the future. If not, than maybe you've gained enough knowledge to answer some other people's questions. In either case, Lens 101 can use you.

Glad to see you got it sorted out, KITT. I was kind of wondering about it myself. You gotta account for all those Hs and Os. The Law of Conservation of Matter and all that. We don't want to break any laws of physics around here.

Heh, heh. Cheap Trick. That's a good one I get it.

Are we going to let anyone under the age of about 35 in on the joke? Some of them have probably studied Music of Ancient Cultures and know what we're snickering about over here.

I don't think they really care. So I'll do it.

Back in the Ancient Mists of a Prehistoric Earth, (1979), it was a song by the band Cheap Trick. Some of the lyrics are quoted above.

Wow. Has it really been over thirty years since they released that album? It was a "record" too. Actual vinyl. I sometimes tease people about "an ancient recording device called a 'cassette tape,'" but a record--that's even more ancient.
