Default Do You change Your Torics Sooner Than You Have To?

I read a lot on these type of forums and such about people who wear their contact lenses for too long and brush off any suggestion that this may not be advisable.

Are you a rebel in the opposite direction? Do you regularly change your bifocal contact lenses MORE often that you need to?

Have you ever thought about changing them sooner? Do you feel it would be too expensive to change them more often?

I would never think of going beyond the recommended limit. And if it got to be three weeks out or so (with my monthly lenses) and I couldn't make them comfortable, I would toss them early. Uncomfortable eyes just make me too cranky. I'm a very busy person and I don't have time to have problems with my eyes. I guess I'm fortunate that my budget isn't so close that that would be the deciding factor. I'm a public school teacher, so it's like I'm rolling in money, but there are probably other ways I would cut corners.

Did you mean that you're NOT rolling in money? Most teachers I know aren't exactly rolling in the dough.

I hope my question doesn't make you cranky like uncomfortable contact lenses. (Dropped one.)

Ooopsie. You mean I'm NOT rolling in money? Oh man....too late to change careers now. And no, I'm not a language arts teacher so I'll make that my excuse for my silly typo. And I'm not all cranky at your observation; means you're paying attention

And I'm having a very good eye day today, so no crankies for me.

I think it would be proper to change the contact lens sooner than later. If it doesn't cause you irritation or whatsoever, you could still use it until the required time. You just have to follow the prescription. What makes the bifocal different from the other contact lens?

We should really change it before our eyes get infected. What could be the difference between the bifocal and multi-focal contact lens? I don't have any background about these lenses. Is it more expensive than the other lenses?

So we've got you and kyles 414 asking the same question not directly related to the question in the thread, huh? Next time start a new thread, okay?

Kyles asked what the difference is between bifocal and multifocal contacts. You want to know how bifocal contacts are different from any other lens. I'll try and tackle these at the same time.

Bifocal contact lenses, like bifocal glasses, have a lens with a magnifying reading part on the bottom half and the top half is for seeing at a distance. Multifocal contacts are similar, but the near power and far power gradually merge into each other, unlike the sharp boundary found in bifocals.

Got it? Does that make sense?

How are your contacts feeling these days, HMBgal? Do you wear the bifocal contacts that this section implies?

Well hi Wierdscience!
I'm doing well with the lenses. I still wish I could see better close-up, but over all, the lenses and my eyes are working well together. Dryness continues to be an issue, but I'm still taking my TheraTears supplements, drinking lots of water, and I use preservative-free drops in my eyes when the dryness strikes. I can go through most days without having to use any drops. By the time I feel like I need drops, the jig is pretty much up and I start looking for my glasses. I can wear my lenses for about 12 hours before they drive me nuts enough to remove them. That's fine, though. My brain still hasn't adapted to low light and night driving. I have halos, star bursts around any lights, and glare to the point that I won't drive at night with them at all. I didn't expect perfection, so I'm happy.

Hi HMB Gal,

I saw your post and I thought I'd ask you about the "Tera Tears supplements" you mentioned. I thought Thera Tears were eye drops, but when you say "supplements" it sounds like some kind of capsule you would swallow. Is that what they are? Capsules?

Yes, they are gel caps with omega fats and stuff. I just finished off a bottle, so I don't have the label in front of me or I would give you more info. Perhaps you could Google it to get more useful info. I would imagine that any supplement of that type would work, but since TheraTears is right there on the aisle in which I get my TheraTears preservative free drops, I just get it there. They are somewhat pricey, so there are probably ways to get the same supplement cheaper.

So if you have these Thera-Tears capsules you won't have to take your contacts out early due to dryness? Which is better, the eye drops or the capsules?

Niner,

Gotta tell ya that I never knew that about toric lenses. I thought that they were weighted at the bottom in order to make the cornea conform to its shape -- round instead "football" shaped. Perhaps that's why I am able to read while (seldom) wearing mine. Makes sense. Thanks for the info

I would make that statement, speaking only for myself, that I think they help lengthen the time I can wear my contacts . I take them in the hopes that it would help my tear film, along with all-around good nutrition, hydration, plenty of sleep, being careful with my makeup, humidity, weather, pollens, and the list goes on and on. That being said, I can go for weeks with very little dryness, and then I'll have days that are just awful, and I have no idea why. I'm in Proclear multi-focals in both eyes, and the right eye is also toric, which seems to be the one that bothers me the most, by far.

For you second question, there is no "better" for me. Drops give immediate relief, and TheraTears is hopefully preventative to lessen the amount of drops I need to use.

Hi gal,

Thanks for your response. I'm wondering how your night time contact lens wear is doing. Do you still have the halos and such, or have you not driven at night since posting this?
