Default Headaches?

First off I have been wearing contact lenses for almost 20yrs. When I was younger the eye doc put me on the RGP's and I HATED them. Popped out all the time and if you got the slighted bit of dust or something in them you wanted to rip your eyes out.

Anyhow, I ran out of contacts and because my prescription was expired I HAD to go get an exam to order new lenses. I went to a different doc then I previously had and he wants me to wear the Biofinity Torics instead of the Accuvue Oasys I had previously been wearing.

While I find these lenses comfortable in my eyes, I don't feel my vision is as good and also I seem to be getting headaches every single day. The script is identical to my old one so the only thing I can come up with is my eyes don't like these lenses?

Anyone else experience anything like this with these? I've been wearing this trial pair for almost a week now with no improvement.

Hi there jdtox.

A couple of things come to mind when I read your posting. The new lenses are Biofinity Torics and they don't let you see as well as Acuvue Oasys. When you say "Acuvue Oasys" do you mean them or "Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism?" If the Oasys lenses are not toric, there's your problem right there.

If you're comparing Biofinity Toric to Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism, then the issue may be that they're made of a different material. The Oasys lenses are 53% galyfilcon A and the rest is water. Biofinity Toric lenses are made of 52% comfilcon A, and that might explain where the headaches are coming from.

I have no proof for this, it's only a theory. Best thing would be to talk to your doctor about it.

Yes sorry, the were Accuvue Oasys for astigmatism. I've been wearing toric lenses forever it seems and I just assumed it was understood from my post.

I went back to the doc and he changed the axis from 180 to 10 on my Right Lens and my vision is sort of better I guess. I don't know, after a week of wearing these, I just don't think I like them at all. They eye doc wants me to wear these for some reason and I can't figure out why???

I just don't think these are as comfortable, with the Oasys I could wear them all day, with these I want them out as soon as I get home from work. Is it possible its because its a Trial Lense? Or should I expect the same from the originals as well? The only other difference I see...besides the different material, these the BC is 8.7 and the Oasys BC is 8.6. What does BC stand for? Could this be the issue?

What really makes me angry is I had no problems before, If I didn't have to get an exam I could of just reordered and been happy.

What should I do?

It's possible that the lenses are uncomfortable because they're trial lenses, but I would think that if I were to give you a pair of contact lenses to try out and see if you like them, I would make them as comfortable as possible. That way you'll love them and buy them, right?

BC stands for "base curve" and describes how big the circle would be if the lenses were shaped like a ball instead of a bowl. Does that make sense? If they have a base curve of 8.7, that means that those lenses would form a ball that was 8.7 millimeters in radius. What that means in practical terms is that the larger the number, the flatter the lens.

I think maybe you need to ask your eye doctor if you can go back to those Oasys lenses you used to wear comfortably.

Thanks for the info.

Last time I went back she(the contact lens technician) told me she was going to order me the Oasys. BUT, when she called me to tell me they were ready, she said the doctor really wanted me to try biofinity so he made a small adjustment (the axis change).

While I felt that was a good move for my vision, I still think these lenses are causing me these headaches. Its like a constant pressure right between the eyes above your nose. Once I get home and take them out it starts to go away. It's like they are suction cups on my eyes, but not. If that makes any sense?!

Ugh, beginning to wish I went someplace else for my exam. I hate being a PITA, but this really sucks.

The way you describe the headaches almost makes me thing there's an issue with the base curve, but the difference between 8.6 and 8.7 is very small.

Maybe you should get a second opinion on those contact lenses. Maybe you should also make sure that your headaches are because of the contact lenses and not something else that needs your attention.

Yeah I was wondering that as well. However since I am wearing my glasses today and having no issues I am positive it has something to do with the contact lenses.

Whether its the material or the fit, that I am unsure of.

Yeah, if you're wearing glasses and don't have a headache, then the contact lenses are suspicious. I did a little Web surfing to see if anyone else has had headaches with Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism, and everything I looked at said that the contact lenses will cure headaches brought about by straining your eyes to see through astigmatic eyes.

So that leads me to believe that you should see your eye doctor for a refit.

So I found my "in case of emergency" contacts. Acuvue Oasys and wearing them today. Guess what...no headaches and in fact I feel like I see better.

Something is just off with those Biofinity's, at least for me. I am calling my new doctor and either going to have him prescribe the oasys for me or ask for my money back.

I'm glad you found relief from your headaches, jdtox. I'd like to know what your new doctor says about this.

Update: ok so I found relief from my headaches by wearing my old lenses. I called the doc and they said ok come and get the Oasys for Astig we have a trial pair in your prescription.

I pick them up yesterday and waited till this morning to put them in. Headaches have returned. WTF!

I looked more closely at the script on the lenses themselves. Everything matches my old script EXCEPT the CYL. On my old script both eyes were -2.25. On this new script they have Left at -1.75 and Right at -1.25.

Could this be causing my headaches all along? I just assumed it was the lenses. Can't believe I missed this. Should I bring my old script to the new doc and explain? I hate being a pain but I've been back to this new doc like 5 times in the last 2 weeks and still cant see as good as I could before.

Hi jdtox. Sorry you had such a letdown with those contacts. I understand that you don't want to be a "pain," but your doctor's job is to give you contact lenses that are comfortable and improve your vision. They go to school for years and years to learn how to do this. As they say in America: "That's why you pay them the big bucks." So see your doctor again and politely explain that your contact lenses are still giving you headaches and that you suspect it might be the cylinder. Maybe he just grabbed the wrong box or something. If he or she will not try to find you some lenses that don't make your head hurt, you've every right to find someone who will.

Funny, I was just looking at my past scripts from ordering online. The script they have prescribed for me is the exact same I was wearing back in 2005.

The only thing diff is those cyl #'s from the last script I got. which was -2.25 and worked better. I think.

Keep us posted jd. I hope you find a contact lens and/or a prescription that doesn't hurt.

So...update.

I just purchased a years worth of lenses. Biofinity Torics. Unreal.

The problem WAS with the prescription and not the lenses themselves. I brought in my old script from my old doc and showed it to them. They said, well sometimes what works on paper doesn't work in the real world.

Vision is 1000% better and these lenses are actually very comfortable. What a pain to get here but I am finally happy.

Fantastic. I'm glad you got a happy ending. I wonder how many others on Lens 101 found out that "what works on paper doesn't work in the real world."

When I read the title of your post, I thought I must chip in and let you know that I have the same issue - headaches. I told my doctor and he said headaches have nothing to do with CL brands or CL use. And he is RIGHT. I too changed my prescription and my headaches have reduced. I'm waiting for the head ache to vanish completely :P

I read your latest post and am happy for you! Trust me, Bioinfinity Torics(and even the soft) are AWESOME. I am currently using a trial pain - acuvue oasys and they dry my eye a lot.

Ahh, you made my day! And Thank You. Well, my user name is to kind of force me into contacts. Because sometimes, I get lazy to handle them, and skip them - I would not want to do that!

I see, kind of like that guy on TV that used to tell himself "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and dog gone it, people like me!"

Don't think I'm making fun of you, I'm not. I admire your ambition. I also think that you write well, too.

Haha!

The thing is I want to constantly remind myself that I have to 'love' my contacts and keep using them. Sometimes I get lazy and just decide to use my glasses, which is what I want to avoid. Not sure if this is ambition though :P

Thanks for your kind words.

Yes, sometimes you have to remind yourself of the reason you decided to wear contact lenses. So what was your reason? Maybe you can start a new thread and other members can pop in and give their reasons.

. . . and so jdtox got the proper prescription for Biofinity Torics and is now happily wearing them with clear vision once again.

Will this contact lens bliss continue? Will jdtox order another round of Biofinity Torics once the present supply wears out? Will jdtox share this happy experience with friends and family and persuade them to try Biofinity Torics? Will they tell us of their experiences too? Stay tuned to Lens 101 and find out!
