Default Biofinity Comfort

I like the Biofinity box. Nice and cool blue with a clear, soothing wave of water in the label. I feel refreshed just looking at the box.

What's it like wearing the contacts? Cool and comfortable, like the box?

Default started biofinity yesterday

and they are ok, take some time to get used to, i had an allergy problem with one eye, took the lens out, soaked in aquify for an hour and reinserted lens, very comfortable after that. there are reports that biofinity lens tear or rip easily so i am being very careful about handling.

That's good to know, rfriel. It's always nice to hear from someone who actually uses the product in question. Thank you.

I had a checkup today... I was due and had a large astigmatism shift in one eye over the last two years. I was previously wearing Acuvue 2's and am now trying a pair of Biofinity (1 toric, 1 standard)... I'll give you a little background to better qualify my feelings so far.

I've worn Acuvue 2's for around 10 years. Before that I wore standard Acuvue for 2 to 3 years and Survue's for almost 8 years before that. Of these three lenses, I preferred the Survue's. I've never had problems with a thicker contact lens or eye dryness. They always stayed in place, were easy to work with and very durable. One particular thing I liked was how it stood nice and firm on the tip of my finger, no wobbling or inverting. When switching to Acuvue's I noted a much thinner lens and found it slightly more difficult to work with. Moving to the Acuvue 2's everything was amplified. I always felt they were too thin, very weak (but never tore one) terrible to work with on your finger and difficult to place on the eye. I always had to play with getting them to lay down (folds in the center, bubbles, etc). Once in place, though, my vision was always crisp and clear and they tended to hold up very well when worn past two weeks. Because of this I never bothered switching.

Now that the astigmatism has become bad enough to warrant correction, I thought I'd try something new and make the jump to a SiHy lens. My initial impressions are as follows:

- Much "firmer" lens... more like the Survue. Very easy to work with and wonderfully easy placement on the eye.
- Even though they are firmer and appear thicker I noted no additional adjustment period over the Acuvue 2's. In other words, they don't feel any thicker on my eye.
- They are more comfortable than any contacts I've tried. No burning... they almost feel like I don't have a lens in.
- Great behavior on the eye. They snap right into place and are the best floating lenses out of the box I've ever had.

So, as a basic lens I'm quite happy with the Biofinity. contact lenses have improved a great deal over what I was wearing. Of course, the verdict is still out on the toric lens. It takes time to adjust and the doctor is not 100% on the prescription due to a little swelling from a pink eye episode a week ago. I tried a toric 6 years ago and had little luck getting it to stay aligned. We'll see how this one is doing in a few weeks.

I'd say give them a try, especially if your doctor can sample you some. As for the lenses tearing, I asked my doctor and she hasn't heard anything. I suspect if you treat them delicately (as you should) they will survive.

I'm still looking for a review comparing the Biofinity, Air Optix and Purevision. Has anyone stumbled across one?

Cheers!
Brad

The Biofinity is available in a greaty variety of prescriptions. The FDA considers the Air Optix and Biofinity to be similar lenses. Why don't you ask your pracitioner for trial lenses and see which works better for you?

You're right, RacerX. That box really is soothing.

Here's another picture I found advertising Biofinity. I don't think I'd describe it as "soothing" though, would you?

Default biofinity

I would try lens with lowest possible modulus and highest Dk/t possible. also, look at H2O content and if the lens had additives or lens coating to make it wearable. biofinities have the lowest modulus for the given H2O content, 48%, and the highest Dk/t available 160 for that H2O and modulus, PLUS, no additives (i.e. oasys, hydraclear), or lens coating either. high modulus is associated with a number of issues, CLPC, epithelial flaps, among others. biofinity is 3rd gen SiHy, air optix, 2nd Gen SiHy, purevision, 1st Gen, SiHy.

i am currently wearing biofinity for 1 week now. biofinity does kind of feel dryer than oasys at times, but using aquify MPS helps alleviate dryness even though staining is slightly higher for biofinity with aquify vs clearcare. biofinity is difficult at times to clean, insert, remove, becuase its so slippery, modulus is slightly higher than oasys but it doesnt feel like it when handling the lens. biofinity is also a monthly rather than 2 week lens too. so far, i've had a pretty good feel for biofinity. i really want to wear this lens because of its superior physical properties, but ALAS, lens fitting is in the eye of the beholder, ARHHH, ARHHHH, sorry for the bad pun

Thanks for that important information, rfriel.

As for the pun, I've heard worse. Like this one I found in a Google search: "Did you hear about the optometrist who fell into a lens grinder and made a spectacle of himself?"

Yeah. That's worse.

You're right, it's not really "soothing" but it does catch the eye. The sky blue background with the pretty girl in a lotus position dressed entirely in white. Eye catching.

Oh my. That was really bad. I'm glad that posting didn't start a "pun war." It would seem that the members of Lens 101 are not easily distracted.

Well, it's been about four months since we've heard from you regarding your Biofinity contacts, rfriel. Are they more comfortable now? Have you torn any?

They never ripped or teared on me, very durable material and very comfortable also.
Oasys lens would tear, rip and disintegrade easily
So far Biofinity are the best lenses I've tried for the last 24 years

Can we assume that since we haven't heard from rfriel for a while that he or she is living happily ever after with Biofinity contact lenses?

Such a war would cause me major IRE! (Sorry, it deserved another pun.)

Anyhow, I am a new Biofinity wearer as well. From 2002 through 2006 I wore Focus Night & Day lenses. I slept in them and left them in for the whole month always. In 2006, I started removing them and cleaning them every night. By 2009, I was no longer able to wear the lenses, now called Air Optics Night & Day Aqua. I would get cloudy vision often in the beginning. By 2010, I could not even tolerate the lenses in my eye for more than a few hours without it feeling like something was scratching me, and the vision would still get blurry. My optometrist had me try Acuvue Oasys, but the result was pretty much the same thing: cloudy vision and scratchiness. I then realized that the Night & Day lenses stopped working for me when they changed to the Aqua nonesense. It seems that this process added a moisture ingredient similar to those in second-generation lenses, such as the Oasys. Since the Oasys lenses also bothered me, I asked for Biofinity, which did not have any such ingredient. I can feel these lenses in my eyes still a bit, but my vision is sharp, no longer ever cloudy, and these lenses do not feel scratchy at all. I work in a very dry environment, so that affects my lenses a lot, but they hold up well here. When I am outside, the lenses feel as though they are not even there, which is how the original Focus Night & Day lenses felt! I am sold on them!

I'm glad you found something you like, Caligula. As I was reading your post I was beginning to fear that it was your eyes that had changed and not the lenses so much. I'm glad for your happy ending with the Biofinity lenses.

I guess "new and improved" doesn't apply to everyone.

The box is comfortable, the lenses are not, but at least I can see through the lens.

Thanks for your input, mgash. So far it looks like most people likes Biofinity contact lenses, but not everyone. Thanks also for bringing some balance.

Ealier comments suggest the problem I am having is the solution. I just got a sample bottle of Opti-Free Replenish from my Dr. (the brand she recommends) I'll give it another try, and see if I can wear the with comfort. Otherwise, I'll stay with my Daysoft Dailies.

Super. Let us know how it works out, okay mgash? I hope you can have the option of wearing either the Biofinity or the Daysoft Dailies.

Thumbs up Biofinity is the only lens that works for me

I have had problems wearing contacts, because I don't wear them everyday, so I never get a chance to get use to them, the doctor gave me a handful of different brands to try, like, acuve advance, O2 optix, Purevision, Night and day, Proclear, and a few others. Nothing worked. I stuck to a pair called Biomedics 55 and I needed a new pair so went to the eye doctor, asked for a trial pair, and the doctor was very busy at the time and handed me some lenses. They said Biofinity... I was like oh, it must be the same lens, just a different name or something. Didn't really think anything of it. Went home, put in these lenses and was like "oh, my gosh! I can even tell i'm wearing any contacts!!!" I new right then that these were different lenses and went online and saw that they sure were. I was like "I think I found my new contacts" and it was an accident. So went back to the doctor and told her what happend, she fitted me for them and now thats all I wear If i'm going to wear lenses for more than a few hours. I have a few colored contacts that I wear for special times. But Biofinity are by far the most comfortable contacts I have ever worn. And when you use the "aquaify" lens solution it makes them even more comfortable. Hope this helps.

I'm glad these Biofinity Lenses work so well for you. I too found them very good when I was wearing soft lenses.

Thanks for sharing your success story Deejayt. I'm glad you found something that works for you.

Just curious--are your initials DJT, by any chance?

So far Biofinity are the best lenses I've tried for the last 24 years
That was almost 18 months ago. I wonder if dim0n still feels so positive about those Biofinity contacts.

Well that was almost a year and a half ago. I hope you're still happy with those Biofinity contact lenses.

Yes, I've seen those pictures in other threads on Lens 101. It's a very pretty face with beautiful eyes, no matter what kind of contacts she's wearing--or not.
