Default What are the best contacts for dry eyes?

I have been wearing contacts for 6 years now and I cannot find one that is comfortable. My eyes are REALLY dry all of the time and the contacts hurt even right when I put them in in the morning. I NEVER sleep in them.

I have tried Night & Day 2 week disposables and they were terrible for the dryness.

I am now trying CooperVision Biomedics 1 Day disposables and they honestly feel the exact same as the Night & Day.

Can someone PLEASE help me??? I love contacts but cannot stand the itchy feeling and dry eyes!

Whether or not your eyes is always dry or not, there is something to put in your eyes always every once in a while to keep it wet and comfortable for you to wear contact lenses. I just forgot what its called, sorry. Anyways, the point is you can have any contact lenses that you want as long as you have that.

I have dry eyes, too. I'm in Proclear mulitfocals and can wear them 16 hours. Here's what I've done: I take TheraTears, although I'm sure there are others that would work just as well. Just be careful you don't get too much vitamins D or A...can be toxic, and drying. I drink lots of water, not much caffeine, and I check in a forum call Dry Eye Zone. That is an amazing source for people with dry eyes. And some contacts will agree with you, some not. I was in gas perms, putting Restasis in my eyes, the works, and nothing helped. Five years later, I'm in a soft lens and doing fine without any prescription medications for dry eyes. Dry Eye Zone has suggestions for warm compresses, how to check for things that might be making your eyes dry (clogged meibobian glands, demodex, etc.). I would think that your eye doc would spot that stuff, but some docs are better with dry eye issues than others. Here's the link to a the site that helped me a lot: http://www.dryeyezone.com/talk/index.php Good luck with this. It is a vexing problem.

Some doctors recommend their patients with dry eyes to switch to Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses. The reason is that an RGP lens is made from polymeric materials and don't contain any water. So water won't evaporate from the surface of the lens, as with soft lenses. Thus one cause for dry eyes is illuminated.

However, RGP lenses may present other problems for people with dry eyes. Since the lens is rigid, it can irritate your eye if there are not enough tears under it. A rigid lens in a dry eye feels much worse than a soft one.

If you have dry eyes and your current contact lenses don't feel too comfortable, you don't have to live with the discomfort. Ask your doctor if the lenses we recommended would work for you.

One of the best options for dryness is a rigid gas permeable lens b/c you could get consistent, great vision and at the same time order a "dry eye material" like lobob's "Optimum Extreme" material. IMO that may be your best option, although it will involve a new fitting, more work on your doc's part, more patience on your part, and possible initial discomfort...but the long term probability of reducing your symptoms is much better with that option..

It might be an eye infection.I think you should see a doctor because people online cant really tell whats wrong with your eye and they do not know your previous eye history or medical things. Go to an eye doctor and have it checked. It has happened to me and it could be an eye infection it happens with contacts...

Default Great Thread

Thanks for the great thread everybody. I'm not sure why it's in the "Biomedics 1 Day" section, but it's very interesting and informative.

My daughter is a long-time successful contact wearer and she started having dry, itchy eyes and we narrowed it down the her roommate's new cat. You could also have a sensitivity to something in the contact itself. But a doc needs to work that through with you, for sure. Good Luck!

Biomedics makes the best dailies out there. I am very active and often have to travel for work. These dailies are ideal, perfectly clear vision and no messy solution to worry about at the baggage check. Biomedics 1 day is a great product at reasonable price.

I'm guessing they're also comfortable?

I'm glad you got that issue sorted out. Is your daughter wearing her contact lenses comfortably again?

Well, people are supposed to bring their questions about Biomedics 1-Day contact lenses here, but people don't always follow instructions.

Well, that's nice, but this isn't the Proclear section. You can find that here:

A good option for dry eyes, right? The word "aqua" right in the name is encouraging.

There's several contact lenses to choose from, but the 5 best contact lenses for dry eyes should not be a tough one. The reason for this is because they make contact lenses specifically for dry eyes, and of course some are better then others, but there's always a winner!

Default Dry Eyes

After thirty years of fitting lenses I can tell you that the real answer is the eye and not the lens. Some like proclear or Extreme H20 are some better. Really, the best idea is to fix the eye. Whether that is supplements, Restasis etc..( I like the etc, but I have it compounded for patients). Once the eye is good, anything will work. Otherwise its all a crap shoot.

they dryer the eye the harder the material so hence, rgp materials are better if your eyes are dry.

If you still want to stay in soft contact lenses there are only three materials that I found comfortable for slight dry eyes or moderately dry eyes.

Coopervision proclear
Benz H20
and Cibavision Air Optix Aqua

Make sure you are clear of symptoms of GPC, blepharitis, contact lens solution allergy and infection which can also give you symptoms of dry eye.
