Default 16 Hour Boston EO

I have just a general question. Please let me know if you need any more information. I'm wondering if Boston EO contacts are recommended to be worn for up to 16 hours. Has anyone tried wearing this type of lens for that long?

Thanks.

Thumbs up

Hi! Sorry for the delay in replying; I just found this site. I was Rx'ed lenses made from Boston EO material and I asked a doctor that very same question, and he said that the oxygen transmissability of Boston EO (Dk of 58) should adequately meet the corneal oxygen needs of a healthy daily wear patient (such as me). In fact, I broke two lenses and was switched to Boston ES (EO is basically a higher oxygen permeable version of ES) with a low Dk of 18 AND the lenses were made extra thick. This was because ES is an extra strong material, and it seems to be adequate according to my doc for all day wear (16 hours or more every day).

It is my understanding that if the fit of your lenses allows good tear exchange and movement, your cornea can get a good oxygen supply even with a low Dk GP lens. I have small diameter lenses and good tear flow under the lens so I don't think oxygen is a problem. Of course it may be for some people so that's why we see a professional! But it seems that in general RGP lenses are designed to be worn from the time we get up until the time we go to bed, and because of the spectacle blur effect, I don't care to take them off early and wear glasses the rest of the night. I just wear them right up until I retire at night, which is at least 16 hours a day.

In short, EO should be more than fine for daily wear on a healthy cornea if the fit of the lens is good. Please let me know if you have any more questions; we are in the minority with GPs and info seems to be hard to come by!

Hi nicholas. Don't sweat being a few days late with responding. I just responded to a reply that I waited almost two years for!

Anyway, tell me more about this "spectacle blur effect" you mentioned.
