Default Color Contacts With Holes?

Has anyone ever thought of making color contact lenses with an actual hole for a pupil? It would let oxygen in and if the contacts were plano, it wouldn't effect the person's vision, would it?

I am sure that issue has been considered and discarded, for obvious reasons.

the pupil hole is not for oxygen ! It is to let light enter your eye in order for you to see well at night when pupils are normally dilated (big). This is the problem with color contacts. The pupil hole is too large and looks soooo fake in Daylight when otherwise our pupils contract to limit the amount of sunlight. I wish there were a contact that could artificially contract and dilate according to light exposure... will it ever happen?

I guess the reasons aren't so obvious to me. Other than the fact that they would be rather fragile, I think contact lenses with actual openings for the pupils might not be a bad idea if it would increase oxygen circulation to the cornea.

I'm with you, VAB. If the reasons were so obvious, I wouldn't have asked the question, would I?

You make a good observation that soft contact lenses with a hole in the middle would be rather fragile, as well as very floppy and difficult to handle. Instead of trying to manipulate a tiny, paper-thin disk, you're now contending with a tiny, paper-thin ring.

Default Contact Dialation Issue Solved? not really but...

Ok, you know those color change lenses for glasses? Maybe they could somehow create a soft lens with that type of material that will change with the light.

Dunno... just random thoughts.

I think we all know the function of the pupil in the eye, moldr. Frodo specifically asked about "Color Contact Lenses with an actual hole for a pupil" not about a hole in your eye for oxygen.

Thank you for the random thought. Wouldn't it be weird to see someone with dark tinted contact lenses in their eyes?

It would be BEYOND weird!

This thread is light-hearted and fun. That's why I posted. But to clarify my thought what I meant was, if they have technology in where a lens can adjust to sunlight, it might be probable that there is such technology in reverse (Like beads that turn white in UV light).

The iris section of a contact lens could be treated with it so that when sunlight is present it gets lighter to make an appearance of dialation.

If I understand what you're proposing SimplySpoiled, it could be a way of eliminating the true eye color from being visible through the pupil of a color contact lens.

I can't beleive how hard it is to find a picture in Google of someone with their true eye color showing through their color contact lenses!

Okay, if someone were to actually come up with a working model of these light sensitive, color changing contact lenses, whom would they contact? Loma Linda Medical Center? Bethesda? The University of Chicago Hospital?

M*A*S*H? "Paging Doctor Peirce . . . "

I feel your pain, VAB. I've started using Yahoo for image searches, and I just spent a frustrating ten or fifteen minutes looking for a generic picture, but didn't find one.
