Question How Often do People Still Need Glasses After LASIK?

I have a friend who had LASIK surgery a few years ago. (In fact, I think her operation was on September 10, 2001.) I'm too polite to ask how old she was, but I'd guess late forties, early fifties. She's a vegetarian and in good health. She used to wear glasses all the time, but now she only wears them to read or do her beloved sewing.
Forgive me for being rude, but isn't the point of LASIK to get rid of your glasses?
I've heard that it's pretty common for people to be rather far sighted even after the operation. I know there are a lot of factors involved, but I'm curious if someone can tell me what percentage of people who undergo LASIK surgery never need glasses again.
Thanks!

Default How Often do People Still Need Glasses After LASIK?

I don't have any solid figures, but I can tell you that many people who have LASIK surgery to correct nearsightedness do wind up wearing glasses for up close work.
Interestingly, people who are myopic (near sighted) usually need to start wearing reading glasses later in life than those who never wore glasses or contacts before, but if a myopic person undergoes LASIK in their mid to late forties, (the age when far sightedness usually begins) that advantage is lost. This is not a surgical complication per se but "an expected result of the physical laws of optics."
The thing to remember is that according to several surveys, LASIK surgery has a patient satisfaction rate of between 92 and 98 percent.

So what you're saying is . . . those of us who wear glasses for myopia in our youth will allow us to start wearing reading glasses a little later than those who never wore glasses at all?

That would be a nice payoff for being called "four eyes."
