Default Focus Daily Not Coming Out

Are daily contact lenses like Focus Daily extra-thin? Have you ever had the experience of trying to take out your contact lens, but it just refused to budge? In many cases, the lens is already out, but somehow it still feels like it's there. In this case, though, you can see it in your eye and even slide it around your cornea a bit, but you just can't seem to grab it to get it out. What did you do to finally get the lens out?

They sure seem thinner to me but when I looked it up, they were listed as having the same center thickness of the Focus Monthly contacts. They definitely seem thinner and more flimsy to me, and that makes sense for a one-day lens. In the past I have had a problem removing the Dailies sometimes too. Always put in a lubricating drop before trying to remove them. Make sure there is a lens in the eye!!! I have actually been pulling on my cornea before and it appeared to move like a lens

See if someone else can verify the lens is there.

Talking Focus Daily Not Coming Out

Do you watch "House"? I don't usually but I found a great quote from the show. A guy came to Dr. House because he couldn't get his contacts out. When Dr. House told him that his contacts were not in his eyes, the patient asked "Then why are my eyes so red?"
"Because you're trying to remove your corneas."

Yes It all made sense when I saw that quote and realized that's what *I* was doing!

Unhappy Can't Take Lens Out

So how do you get them out? I've been wearing contact lenses since 1964 - first rigid, then gas permeable, then soft biweekly toric and now Focus toric Dailies. I never had trouble with biweekly toric lenses. I have NEVER before had trouble getting lenses out until now. How do you do it? I've searched the Internet and tried the techniques provided, but I am still grabbing my eyeball until my eyes turn blood red - and they still will not come out. Apparently those little suction devices only work for hard lenses. What is the trick? My opthalmologist was no help at all!

Hi Lyrinda,

How are you doing? I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with your contacts. Did you read what Nicholas had to say?

"Always put in a lubricating drop before trying to remove them. Make sure there is a lens in the eye!!! I have actually been pulling on my cornea before and it appeared to move like a lens. See if someone else can verify the lens is there."

Unfortunately, the Internet is probably not the best place to find the kind of information you're looking for. Do you have friends or family members you can ask about getting your contacts out? It's very hard to describe how to handle contact lenses by typing out the words. At least it is for me. A demonstration would be much better. Maybe you can find another doctor?

I have to agree with Babyblues that Internet forums like this are great, but when it comes to questions on how to do something, a live demonstration is probably best.

I'm surprise your contact lens practitioner won't help/advise on this. I had an hour's teaching session before they let me loose with contacts. Perhapos you should pay them a visit?

See if this helps. This is from ehow.com:

Step 1
Wash and dry hands thoroughly.

Step 2
Close sink drain before removing lenses and place a towel down, as well, to catch the lens if you should drop it.

Step 3
Place a few drops of a wetting solution in the eye to loosen up the lens.

Step 4
Look up and use the index finger to gently slide the contact lens in a downward direction. As soon as it is down, use thumb and index finger to gently grasp the lens and pull it off of the eye. Very gently rub the lens to unfold and restore it to its original shape.

Step 5
Place lens in storage case and cover with storage solution. Replace storage lid with correct marking (right or left). Repeat process for second lens.

Step 6
Let me know if you find this helpful.

If you've been wearing contacts since 1964, is there anything here that you didn't already know? If you've been wearing contact lenses for 45 years, I don't know what I can tell you that you haven't already tried. I hope you were able to find something helpful here.

I don't have trouble taking my lenses out, but that technique of sliding the lens down and then pinching it just doesn't work for me. The fitter at my opthalmologist's tried to get me to use that method, but even there I couldn't really do it.

The assistant there (who wore lenses herself) suggested sliding the lens sideways towards the outer corner of the eye, and that's worked much better for me.

Once it's slid off the cornea, the lens wrinkles up, because it no longer fits smoothly over the flatter curve of the sclera. I keep pushing it into the corner, and the lens unsticks off my eye, leaving an edge that's easy to grab, or falls out and sticks to my eyelashes.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Wow. Can you imagine? You're over there pulling on your cornea because you think there's a contact lens there, but there isn't. You're pulling and rubbing and wow . . . pain.

What sometimes is a problem is if you're a bit rough with a lens and it breaks up in your eye. That can happen if you've rubbed your eye vigorously at some point.

When it's in one piece, the lens floats onto your sclera where it's easy to see (OK, not easy, but in a good light you can see the edges). When it's broken up, the pieces don't float to the centre of your eye at all. Finding them and getting them out can be hell - and you can really feel the torn edges too!

Lots of eyewashing can flush them out or at least get them to go where you can see them.

For this reason, I've found it's well worth carrying your specs with you, with a little mirror in the case, if you're travelling far from civilisation - and bathroom mirrors!

Thanks for those helpful tips, Amanda. I hope none of that information comes from your own experience.

I'm afraid it does come from experience. After it's happened once or twice, you learn not to rub your eyes hard with lenses in!

Yeah, I can see how you would have a strong incentive to treat your eyes even more carefully than before you started wearing contact lenses.

I have worn contact lens for years and switched to Focus dailies after having had GPC. I also struggled with removing them and was SOOOOO frustrated. Finally, I stopped wetting them before removal. It seems like it makes them stickier on my finger and much easier to remove. I can get them out first try 99% of the time now. I do like the instructions above (hard to miss!!) except I sweep mine to the side and then do the thumb/forefinger pinch!

Thanks for telling us about your contact lens removal technique.

Did your encounter with GPC have anything to do with your contact lenses? Were they daily lenses?

So it seems that you've grown as a person after this experience.

I'm trying to find something positive here. Work with me.

Well, yes, perhaps I have: I learned something new. Many things are perhaps learned best the hard way.

I love that quote!

As others have said on this site: "You learn something new every day--if you're lucky."

That sounds good, but I have a few questions. First, can you name a few brands of methyl cellulose based contact lens lubricants? Looking for the name might be easier than scanning the ingredients.

Secondly, when you say "rock them left-right," that means just move your eyes left and right with your eyes closed, like you're speed reading?

This cartoon made chuckle. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Wow. Ask and ye shall receive.

I like the name "Gonak." It sounds like a Japanese monster: "Godzilla vs Gonak."
