Have you ever had a Focus Monthly Visitint contact lens break in your eye? I've read that it happens from time to time with these? So when it did, could you get the pieces out yourself or did you have to seek medical attention?

Boy I hope that never happens to me. I would imagine that if it did I would need to seek some medical attention.

I would think so too, Teddikitty. I haven't gotten any responses in a while. Maybe Focus Monthly Visitints just never break.

The trouble with this forum is that each section is specific to a particular make and type of lenses. So you ask a question about one type of lens that applies to lots of other types, but only those interested in precisely the same type of lens as you are will see the question, and this reduces the chances of getting an answer.
Anyway, rant over... I don't wear Focus Monthlies; I wear Focus Dailies, and I honestly can't say how similar they might be, but... I've had Focus Dailies break up in my eye on a few occasions, when I've been a bit rough rubbing my eyes. It also seems more likely to happen when I've been wearing the lenses for a long time (but never more than a day, obviously). It's not that bad; in fact, I've had a fragment floating around in my eye for at least a day on one occasion; it didn't bother me much and I was wearing an intact lens as well. Getting the bits out is a pain, because they don't float onto the centre of your eye like the whole lens does. They hide in the corners, and they're really hard to see. Once you've found one, with a good light and a magnifying mirror, moving it to a part of your eye where you can lift it off isn't too hard. A good flush with some eyewash or wetting solution helps too. |

Would you say that it's easy to accidentally break a lens? Have you learned how much pressure is safe when rubbing your eye by now or does it just fall apart no matter how gentle you try to be?

I wouldn't say it was easy to break a lens. I think when I've broken one, I've been rubbing pretty hard - probably way too hard. Typically, it's been when a fly or something has gone in my eye, but my hands are too dirty at the time to do anything other than rub and hope. A gentle rub, more like a massage of the eyelids, is no problem. I have the feeling that a lens is more likely to break up towards the end of a long day. This could be because my eyes are a bit dry, so rather than just slide around on my eye, part of the lens might stick a bit, while the rest slides - and the two parts separate: broken lens. Does that help? |

Here's a thought. If you want to find out just how easy or difficult it is to break a lens, why not try with a used, discarded one, fresh out of your eye?
Then you can pull it and mangle it between your fingers and get a feel for how tough it is (or isn't) without the risk of getting any of it stuck in your eye. |

I would think that daily lenses would be more fragile than monthly. It just makes sense. "Does that help?" Yes it does. Thank you very much. |

SOft lenses of any kind don't "BREAK'' in the eye....thats a myth!

Well, Zana must have heard it from somewhere. I don't see how something so thin and soft can break in the eye, though. What about ripping? Can they rip while you're wearing them?

(I've been wearing them virtually every day for a couple of years now, and it's only happened two or three times, so it's not that common - even if you're as clumsy as me). This can happen if you're heavy-handed when trying to remove them, or if you rub your eyes vigorously while wearing them. I suspect that, they dryer they become, the more easily broken/torn/damaged they are. |

and often the original poster comes back himself ranting about why he hasn't gotten any answer to that very specific question! |

I'm glad that didn't happen in this thread. Happy New Year everyone.

Break, rip--whatever verb you want to use. The point is your contact lens is now in at least two pieces and it's still theoretically in your eye.
