Default Long-Lasting RGP Contacts

I heard that many people lose or break their rigid gas permeable contact lenses before they really need to replace them. Do they actually last that long? Why is it that you finally have to pitch them? Do they get those same protein and lipid deposits that doom so-called disposable contacts much sooner?
