Default Is it Possible to Have Really, Really Bad Vision?

Does anyone remember the cartoon "Mister Magoo?" It's about an old man who wears thick glasses, but he still has horrible vision. His voice was provided by Jim "Thurston Howell III" Backus.

Anyway, here's my question. I know a lot of people who don't see very well without their contacts, but they still can function, even if they can't drive. Are there really people out there in the real world who--without their contacts--have such terrible vision that they are basically blind?

Yes there are and there are a lot of people who cannot see well with their correction. The definition of legal blindness includes the term best "corrected vision" or something similar. So when people say they are legally blind without their glasses or contacts, they are just saying they don't see well. Since the definition of legal blindness includes correction you cannot be legally blind without correction. So everyone that is legally blind has that bad of vision with correction. Macular degeneration is a frequent cause of this.
I think what you are asking though is if some prescriptions are so bad that even with correction they don't see well, it happens but not often, usually there is some disease associated with vision that bad.

A very thoughtful answer, Sir Robin. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
