I read that you should always keep the bottle of contact lens solutions closed when you're not using it. Why is that? I suspect there's reason other than "you might spill it."

They probably do but our tears help flush them away there. I always wondered why it was necessary if the solution in the bottle is designed to eliminate the pathogens anyway. It is probably just over-kill but I have always been told that you can be fined in an optical shop if the bottle lids are not closed.

Did they ever tell you what kind of fine it would be if you didn't close a lid? How serious of an offense is this? I think you're right about the solution being antiseptic. |

not only woudl it spill, or airborne pathogens contaminate. another was evaporation of water and other chemicals that keep the solution at the right viscosity and PH. if the salts that are added to mimic are concentrated you change the ph and can damage the eye or ruin the lens by not allowing the proper rehydration...
have you ever seen teh edge of a solution bottle with that papery plastic film residue..... thats result of being exposed to air.... j |

That's an interesting point about evaporation changing the solution, jimmy's devoted. I hadn't thought of that.
By the way, I've heard of ear drops that had instructions that you should wash your hands before handling the bottle and dropper. |

That's probably not a bad idea when handling eye drops, either. It couldn't hurt, right?

Tom & Jerry. The one where Jerry hides out in a dog pound and Tom disguises himself as one of them to find Jerry. Classic.
