Default The Reading Stone
One of the first recorded instances of using an object to aid vision was in the year 1000 AD, and the object was called a "reading stone." This was simply a glass ball that was laid on top of the material to be read to magnify the letters.

You are right I guess you do learn something new every day. I would have probably never ran across that information if you had not provided it. So, Thank you that was a pretty neat fact!
