Default Ordering Contacts with an Expired Prescription

Hello.

I've got this friend who likes to buy his contact lenses on line, but he doesn't like to go go the eye doctor. He told me he could just use the same prescription he's had for a while and order new contacts. He says that his vision hasn't changed and that the eye doctors have teamed up with the contact lens companies and arranged this deal so they could make more money. I just want to tell him not to be so cynical and go get the new prescription. They check up on that, right? Don't the contact lens sellers contact the doctors before sending the contacts anyway? If nothing else just so they won't get sued for selling contacts that don't fit?
No only that, but while you're being checked out for a new prescription doesn't the eye doc check up on the general health of your eyes as well? This all sounds like a lot of risk just to save a few bucks. What do you think?
