Is it possible to get these novelty lenses with a prescription? All the sites I've seen with 'em are purely aesthetic.

Absolutely, one needs a prescription to get plano contact lenses because of their FDA classification as a medical device. Here is a bit of history on this subject that you might find fascinateing
