Default Strong Prescription For Colored Toric Lenses?

Hello, All!

I have a question I am anxious for any help/feedback on.

In the past year, my contacts prescription has increased in strength. For several years before that, I enjoyed going back and forth between clear contacts and colored contacts. But recently when I tried to order colored contacts (through Freshlooks) from my optometrist, he said that their toric colored lenses are only made in as strong as a -4.00 prescription, and my recent prescription is -5.00. He was willing to order them for me, but with me knowing that my eyesight wouldn't be as clear with them.

That seems like a big discrepancy in prescription, so I'm hesitant to do it. (I get headaches when I use lenses that are not my correct prescription.)

I've tried doing some searching online for colored toric lenses with stronger prescriptions, but haven't found anything yet, and there didn't seem to be any online discussions yet about this particular subject.

I really enjoy the variety that comes with using colored lenses, and I'll be very disappointed if I can never use them again because of my prescription.

Anyone else had this problem? Any known solutions? (Any companies that make stronger prescriptions?)

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Frostine. Love the name btw - reminds me of my old CandyLand days!

If you're trying to buy colored toric lenses in the US, I believe you are out of luck due to your high prescription. However, if you're willing to consider ordering lenses made overseas through the internet, there are a few options. I know it seems odd ordering foreign lenses online, but a bunch of us have had to do that since they discontinued nearly all of the colored lenses in the US. You can try Googling the following brands: Soleko Queens Solitaire Toric lenses go up to -12.00 (some web stores only carry up to -6.00). There's also Magic Top Optogel Toric, which go up to -10.00. Waicon also makes a colored toric lens that I believe comes in higher strengths, but the only way I'm aware of to order these is through an individual who sells them (you can PM me for more info if you'd like). I have never personally worn any of these lenses, but I've read good things about all three on internet forums. I will warn you though, they're rather costly, but then, colored torics have always been expensive, even when you could get them in the US. The problem with ordering them online without trying them first is, of course, you're stuck with pricey lenses that may or may not fit and look nice on you. It's really frustrating that there are so few colored lenses available in the US these days, and if you need a toric lens and/or have a high prescription, it's pretty much hopeless. I'd like to believe that will change one day soon.

Shamrocker--

(That is indeed how I chose my username. lol) Thank you for your great suggestions! I have checked out the brands you mentioned, and will probably get some Queen Solitaire lenses. It's great to know that at least a few companies still make colored toric in my prescription. Thanks again!

Did you notice the pretty red banner at the top of the page? The one that says "Lens.com"? They're the ones who make this forum possible and so I checked their lenses. All of their color contacts come in a -5 prescription. Most go as far as -8. So click on that banner and see if you can find something you like. If you do, have your prescription handy and order. Let me know if you decide to do that.
