I went to a contact lens review site and I was surprised at the number of negative reviews. I was wondering if maybe there were some multipurpose cleaning solution that was responsible for this rather than the lenses themselves.

i use alcon solution, clean my o2's everynight even rub them a bit.
o2's still caused me irratation, my eyes would get really dry and red, to the point it looked like i was crying. it started with a pair that i ordered in 2006, got another pair like that in 2007, though they weren't as bad. i'm giving mine one last shot, that i've just recently ordered. probably try them again once my eyes get better from the last 2007 pair. it'll probably be a 2-4 weeks, i'll post back here when i do. |

According to that site, the best solutions for O2 Optix are Unisol, Clear Care, Opti-Free Express, Opti-Free Replenish and a few others, but that should give you some things to put on your shopping list. Aquify is another one that is recommended. |

Thank you to everyone who contributed their thoughts to this thread. This is how a forum should work; someone throws out a question and several people pitch in and give their unique spin on a solution.

I'm glad you found something that works for you, dragonchi. What cleaning solution do you use? Any of the ones mentioned above?

I have tried Clear Care peroxide based and Aquify. I have dry eyes and with both of these solutions I literally had my contacts fall out while wearing, usually before six hours.
Then I used RepleniSH. It works great, but I noticed that even with removing and rubbing, I was still having issues after less than a week of wear. Finally, after a bit of research, I took to the following routine: 1. Remove at night, rub, rub, rub. Rub them one way, turn it over and rub some more, ensuring that both sides get a good scrubbing. I don't think I initially was rubbing enough. Then rinse. 2. Soak for at least 6 hours so the lenses get re-hydrated and disinfected. 2. In the morning, I rinse both sides again with repleniSH and then insert. The two things I saw that helped out was scrubbing the FRONT of the lense (not the part that goes on the eye) and the morning rinse. If I don't do the morning rinse it always seems like I have something in my eye. However, if I rinse before I insert, they wear fine all day. Couple more things. If I wear them in an extremely dry place, I am putting Contact compatible drops in within 15 minutes. Second, smoke will eat a set of O2 Optix in less than 10 minutes. It will absolutely destroy them. I found out during a party when we had five people smoking. I left the place and barely made it home, vision completely blurry. I removed and cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, but the lenses were done. I hope this helped. |

Surely that bit about the O2 Optix (Air Optix Aqua ?) lenses being trashed by passive cigarette smoke is critical to the manufacturers. Have you contacted them about this problem? Do you know anyone else who has had such an experience? Your cleaning regime experience information is useful - thanks. knotlob |

I used to detest cigarette smoke in bars because you get showered, wash your hair, put on clean clothes before you go out and then after coming out of the bar you've got to do the same again and wash your clothes to get rid of the stale cigarette smoke smell. Some of the bars in Ireland used to have a smoke filter device on the ceiling, but the bar owners either couldn't be bothered to switch it on, or pay for it to be serviced. i eventually stopped going to some bars that were particularly smoky. I wonder if that detrimental smoke warning with your lenses applies to other manufacturers also - presumably does? (I haven't got a package insert yet with my new lenses as they have been trial ones). knotlob |
