"You're older than you've ever been
And now you're even older.
And now you're even older.
And now you're even older.

You're older than you've ever been
And now you're even older.
And now you're older still."

Do people's eyes seem to become more dry and less tolerant of contact lenses like Proclear Compatibles, even after wearing them for years and years without problems?

I think so yes, without problems, but I don't really know if I get the point.

Good song.

I think what SandiStix is asking about is the aging process. Do people's eyes feel dry more often as they get older and I think the answer is yes. Me, personally, as long as I'm not in front of the computer for hours and hours my eyes feel fine.

Proclear Compatibles, as far as I know, are not especially made for people with dry eyes. I suppose a lot of people wear them for years until their eyes can no longer tolerate them comfortably.

I hope that helps you, Stix.

You understand my question correctly, Logopolis. Your answer was indeed helpful. Thank you posting.

I think what Sandi Stix is asking is: can a person wear Proclear Compatibles for twenty years comfortably, but then start having problems simply because they're "older than they've ever been"?

That's even better than your previous summary, Logopolis. Thanks.

Yes, this is a very common problem. The glands supplying the tear film to the eye slow down and produce less. The first thing to try is Systane drops from Alcon. One drop in the morning before insertion of lenses and another after removing lenses at night.

Wow, thanks for the detailed instructions, CLF. I think people are going to find your post helpful in a very practical way.

Have you tried this for yourself contact lens Fitter? Can you personally vouch for the efficacy of these Systane drops?

Yes, I do use it myself. I have 'dry eyes' and Kerataconus. Without my CL's AND glasses (at the same time), my best V/A is 20/40. So wearing time is very important to me. Like everything else, it will work better for some than others, but the best thing available without a Rx and side effects.

Thanks for the information, Contact Lens Fitter. However, I'm not familiar with the abbreviation "V/A." What does that mean?

Judging by the context, I'm going to guess "visual acuity."

Is that correct, CLF?

I'll buy that. V/A means visual acuity.

So you wear glasses and contact lenses at the same time?

Your eyes need care and nutrition just like your skin, your joints or any of your other organs. The problem is not the contact lens that you are wearing. You may need to use eye drop to moisturize your eyes. Alternatively, you should start having a healthier diet or consume eye supplement to help maintain the natural function of your eyes. I hope this advice help and do have a good day.

I think, yes. That's why we have to rest for a while after spending long hours of stay in front of the computer or television. Will you agree with me?

Can you recommend any drops or supplements or anything that Lens 101 members can buy from the store (not "this exclusive TV offer") that will help with dry eyes?

Default Dry eye Supplements

If you are experiencing dry eye, you may see your eye doctor so that he can give you proper medication for your eyes. Usually, they measure the amount of tears in your eyes. May I ask if you are taking antihistamines or anti-depressants? Those kinds of medicines triggers dry eyes.

There are no supplements shown to help 'Dry Eye Syndrome". It is a known medical fact that tear production slows as we age. It affects each person differently. 'Systane' by Alcon is one of a few products known to help and available without Rx and has no known side-effects. If this does not work, see a doctor for Rx medication, but those do have side-effects. As mentioned above, some medications will cause drying. As a rule, anything that causes dry mouth will also dry the eyes.

What if I just have dry eyes once in a while and I just need some quick relief? Is Systane good for that? Do I really need to get a doctor involved?

For occasional dry eyes, I usually recommend 'Refresh". You would only go to Systane twice a day or a doctor if the problem was chronic.

Thanks, Contact Lens Fitter. I was wondering about the same thing that John 316 asked about.

Oh, so Refresh is good for everyday use, but Systane is only for serious cases of dry eye. Do you need a prescription for Systane?

I went to systene.com and looked around. It didn't specifically say that you need a prescription for Systane, but I never saw the phrase "over-the-counter" either. I'm reasonably sure these drops do not require a prescription.
