Default Torics Contact Lenses With Monovision

Hello and Happy New Year!

(Maybe that will make you feel cooler if you're reading this in August. )
I read a question on another forum (Not as good as Lens 101, of course!) from a woman who says that she was wearing Purevision toric contacts with monovision. Now, if I know my contact lens vocabulary, monovision contacts use one eye for close vision, while the other is for distance vision and toric contacts are for astigmatism. Now, if a person has astigmatism, wouldn't it be in both eyes? Does that mean one eye has a "nearsighted" toric contact lens while the other has a "farsighted" toric contact? Can they do that? Is that really expensive if it's possible?
I hope someone can explain this to me.

Default monovision and toric lenses

Hi,

I am not sure if I can answer your question but will tell you I have monovision contacts. I have an astigmatism in my right eye in which I wear a B & L Toric hydrogel. That is the eye corrected for near vision.

I have NO astigmatism in my left eye. I wear a regular B & L hydrogel in that eye and that is my distance eye.

The torics costs me $79 for a box of 6 and the reg hydrogel costs me $46 for a box of 6 (all before my discount).. so is about $85 for 6 months for both eyes...i.e. $170 for year and these are 30 days disposables.

Hope it helps..

Hi misskitty. I hope you don't mind my interruption or my ignorance.

So you say that in your right eye you have correction for distance vision AND astigmatism? Does that contact lens have the ballast that keeps it from turning?

One last question. What was it like getting used to monovision? Was it hard?

Thank you!

Default monovision and toric lenses

HI, Hotchick...

Yes, my right contact is thicker at the bottom and that is the ballast so no matter how I put it in, it will rotate in place and stay there.

It was not difficult to get used to because I basically had monovision with my glasses since the right eye is hard to get 100% acuity with. Basically without correction I am legally blind in the right eye.

But, the monovision is no big deal, least not for me. I don't think it is as noticeable as you are thinking it would be.. your dominant eye will take over anyway and compensate for the nearsightedness when it needs to and then when you are doing close up work the nearvision eye takes over. Now if I am in a restaurant, in low light, I need readers to see the menu.

Hope that helps.. good luck. Will be interested to hear how you make out should you go that route and what contacts you have success with? I am always researching the better avenue with the contacts since I am new getting back into them. But, am really limited on brands at this time since I have a -3.25 cyl astigmatism in that right eye and most companies only offer up to -2.25. So, I am hopeful more manufacturers get on the bandwagon in the future.

Good luck.

Default Thank You . . . Ladies?

Between Hottchick and misskitty, it seems like we're having Ladies' Night here in Lens 101, but when it comes to Internet screen names, all bets are off.

Thank you for sharing your experience and insight into the wonderful worlds of toric and monovision contact lenses.
