I think I will have to agree with Tiger that the RGP lenses fits differently because they're smaller. When your doctor said that had a "textbook" fit, I just hope he was reading the right one. :)

I don't know about eye doctors, but Lens.com has a guarantee. I wish I could say that no one here on Lens 101 had to find out how they make good on that promise, but you know, stuff happens.
