If someone was going to try contacts for the first time and they asked you about a comfortable lens, would you recommend Soflens 38 to them?

Back about 12 years ago, when I first wanted contacts, I got them. And they worked out pretty well, they were the kinda last a whole year, i think i had them longer than that. I never had any problems with them, could actaully sleep in them to. But then I went to a diffrent type, after a year of wearing those, because I went to walmart and get an eye exam, and of course they switched me to a different type. I was to young to realize anything about contacts at the time. So I didn't know to tell them to keep me on the same ones. and now I can't even wear contacts anymore. Maybe I should go back in time and just get the ones I had when I was 13. Must have been a reason the doctor gave them to me in the first place, it was a real doctor's office, not walmart or target. They are just trying to sell you the most expensive lens they have so they can make some money.

I presume that the original contacts that worked for you were soft lenses but of course you should not sleep in them I guess. You don't say why you cannot wear contacts any longer.

You could try the originals again, but technology moves on and there may be something better around for your eyes now - particularly if you have some problem with your eyes.

Perhaps you should try a new eye doctor (one that you trust) or the original one if he/she is still around. See what they recommend for your condition.

Oh, that was a long time ago, 7 years ago, I don't even live in the same state I use to. lol I can wear contacts, but just have a hard time. The biofinity are the only ones that seem to work "ok" for me. But at night I can't see. I get really bad halo's and fog, but only at night. I haven't really worn them for more than 5 or 6 hours straight, if that. I only wear them when I go out on the weekend, to a bar or something, just for a few hours. Thats why I brought up the old school Optima 38, because I could wear those all day, and all night, and just re-wet them and they would be fine. It could have been because I wore them "everyday" and my eyes got used to them. Right Now I normally have my glasses on. So I can go a month without wearing lenses most of the time. I do work on a computer for 9 hours at work everyday, and that seemed like a big problem for me and contacts.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I think contacts and working at a PC seem to cause some people a lot of grief. Must admit that I found my previous set of yearly lenses pretty good - wore them for probably about 25 years, but have switched to Biofinity recently and it did take some time to adjust. I hope they will be OK, but like you, there seems to be some minor problems when using a PC, particularly late in the evening.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Knotlob.

You're not the only one to have a problem with working on a computer while wearing contact lenses. All that close-up focusing can strain your eyes after several hours. Are you experiencing halos like Deejayt mentioned? If you are, you may need to be re-fitted.

Hi Brittvid,

No halos, but the lenses are just 3.5 weeks old (supplied at my last eye exam/fitting) so still getting used to them - previously wore yearly standard hydrogel lenses with 70% water. One lens is 0.25D stronger than the other and both eyes should be the same lens prescription, so this is not helping close vision, together with lack of lens accommodation! Will fit two new lenses with the same strength tomorrow and see how I get on.

Hi Knotlob. It looks like you've been pretty busy contributing to Lens 101. We like that sort of thing around here.

I'm sorry to read that you're having some trouble with your contacts, but I'm sure you and your eye doc can work things out. I'm looking forward to reading about your progress.

How's it going, Knotlob? Did you get a better pair of contact lenses?

Hello Hogwartz

I bought a pair of Biofinity lenses both with the same prescription (as that is what I should have had in the first place) and they were much better. I found the new lenses much better in my right eye than the previous ones. I don't know if that was just part of the 'getting used' to them process, or a slight difference between the old and new lenses. Coopervision told me that the lenses that were supplied by the optician (under a different name) were the same as Biofinity, so apart from differences within manufacturing tolerances, they should have been the same. Apparently small differences in astigmatism can affect the comfort of ordinary non-toric lenses in each eye.

I have been happy enough with these Biofinity lenses, but did notice it is relatively easy to damage them - in handling and probably more likely, with the type of lens case was using. Now back to the recommended lens case and no more damage.

I am actually trying RGP lenses at present and vision is slightly sharper, but the lack of comfort (at least until I get used to them), really makes me appreciate how comfortable the Biofinity lenses are.

Hi Knotlob,

So you're currently using Biofinity lenses, and they're good except they require some careful handling, and you're also giving RGP lenses a try? The RGPs give sharp vision but they're uncomfortable, does that sound like a good summary?

Yes, that's fair. I think the handling would be OK when you take care, change the type of lens case and possibly the method of removing them from the eye. Very comfortable lens and also a very high Dk/t oxygen transmissibility.

The RGP lenses certainly give sharp vision (I have slight astigmatism, which is not corrected by the Biofinities), but the RGP design, even though non-toric can be tweaked to correct some astigmatism.

I hope/believe that the RGP lenses will become comfortable after a few weeks. My son wears them and says if he doesn't think about them, he doesn't feel them.

Hello Brittvid

This will be my third attempt to reply, what with PC crashes, etc!

Actually I never wore Soflens 38.

I did wear a yearly lens, Coopervision/Hydron Omniflex for many, many years. I did dabble with Soflens Daily disposables when I tore an Omniflex lens whilst on holiday and didn't have a spare with me. The Soflens Daily disposable (and the Soflens 59) are of Hilfilcon B lens material.

The Soflens 38 is Polymacon, so quite a different lens material.

I am now somewhere between Biofinity Monthly and Menicon Z Alpha RGP lenses.

Keep us posted on your progress, okay knotlob?

How is your computer feeling? When it crashed, did you have to take it and pay for it to be fixed, or do you have some nerdy friends like I do who will fix your computer in exchange for some munchies?

Yeah, it's good to have nerdy--er, computer savvy--friends who will help you with your computer in exchange for some goodies.

By the way. You may have noticed that on the Snickers wrapper it says "prends une." That's French for "take one."

Just in case you were wondering.

`cause I was, and I looked it up.

My computer is very old and still running Win ME/Linux. It gets a bit low on resources sometimes, especially with some of the newer anti virus/spybot resident software and this can crash the PC. I usually just reboot and hopefully it is OK. I have bought the necessary bits to build an i5 Pentium quad core system - more or less a completely new PC, including the Power Supply, but have to do a major backup so I don't loose my emails & browser bookmarks, etc.

I can probably kiss goodbye to 2 days when I start that upgrade, but it should be worth it to access the new features, backup my phone, etc. etc.
